Smaller packages

Tried to make a recipe today of my moms. It was like 16 ounce size, but the store only has like 12 ounces. Sorry might not be exactly correct, but the packages for EVERYTHING has gotten smaller, like we are too stupid to not notice. This irritates me to no end. I would pay more for the same size product we are used to. They are smaller and still more expensive. I wish I could explain to these companies that recipes are based off of the size that their packages were for decades! It angers me that they think we are stupid thinking its the same size. Gas doesn't try to hide behind smaller gallons and we still buy it....SORRY, rant over, just irritated me

I so agree, it is very frustrating. Frozen food, dry food; even can sizes have changed. So, if your recipe uses 16 oz, you need 2 boxes. Just doesn't make sense does it.

This is why I try to stay away from recipes using pre-packaged stuff. Cooking from scratch has it's advantages.

It was for a cake using a boxed cake mix. Now, I know I could buy 2 boxes and figure it out, but then I would have leftover in the 2nd box....Just ridiculous.

I also come across this in packages of kielbasa also. They have 16 ounce packages which was the standard, now I am seeing 12 ounce packages. Same with noodles, 12 and 16 ounce packages. Basically its pretty much across the board, I have noticed canned tomatoes seem to be same size. Cereal boxes are smaller. I could go on and on I am sure!

Yes I would agree Shadows! I love to cook from scratch too. But some of my moms recipes such as gooey butter cake- uses a mix, german chocolate snack bake bars, pudding poke cake, coconut magic bars....etc....all use mixes. And they are great bars and cakes!

Cooking from scratch is, of course, ideal. But most people simply cannot make that happen because of how their lives work. It's nice to be able to toss a can or box of something in a recipe, especially when it can shave hours off your prep time. When I'm home all day and have time to spend in the kitchen, I cook from scratch. But when I'm working all day and have an hour or less to get dinner on the table, cans and boxes are a godsend.

I try to cook from scratch, but baking, I love things my mom made as I was a kid. It doesn't really have anything to do with time in my case, since I am still recovering from my fractured knee, but recipes that were tried and true from my mom would certainly be easier if the companies who put out these products, thought about tradition and recipes before they started to change things. I collect cookbooks from church groups and things like that. Lots of great recipes in those books. But like I say, they call for things that used to the norm....Not so much anymore.

Sorry if people thought I was being petty. Makes me mad that the sizes are no longer the same, it affects the recipes.

Dis, I get lots of cookbooks like that as well. Church groups, schools, local town books; and, many of the recipes are from what their parents made. I have some old ones my Grandmother and Mom had ... not too many, but a few; and, so many items I have to change and re-calculate.
