Weird

Post by HeatherFeather » Mon Jul 02, 2012 11:41 am

I stopped at a yard sale this weekend and it was so weird. They were clearly re-selling food they had bought either using coupons or in bulk. It was like a grocery store. Their garage had a huge stockpile inside, which they were not selling - the stuff they were selling was out on tables in the driveway.

I didn't check the prices or anything, I just left. I have never seen such a "yard sale" before. I am pretty sure reselling food the way they were is not legal.

 Weird yes I can't say if it's legal or not but I wouldn't think so, I've never seen food sold at yard sales

If it were just a cooler of some sodas or a few items, I wouldn't think anything of it. However, this lady had tons of grocery items out that she had bought in multiples. It was really like a little food store.

I have seen it before, but it was a moving sale because the husband had passed. She had several sealed cases of cans of peaches, pears, soda etc. And no profit, I remember they were just asking a few bucks for each. I didn't think about it at the time, but yeah, probably not legal. But I understood why she was doing it. She was moving to a assisted living center, so it wasn't needed. But re-selling food just isn't right.

I'm wondering if it's one of those extreme couponer's from the TLC network trying to make an extra buck  they should be taking their stock piles over to the less fortunate people who could use it instead of hoarding it in their basement just to look at it...

I totally agree. When my Dad passed, I kept most of the food, but they had some canned items I didn't use. They got donated. Just trying to make a buck is just not right.

I wonder if that sort of thing should be reported.
Wonder about the expiration dates too.
I know me and my big mouth would have said something to the people selling that food too.
That isn't right! Just not right! :!:

I read a news article about this kind of food sale, but I can't remember where. It was about women in Arizona and New Mexico, after they ran out of unemployment benefits, buying food with food stamps and then selling most of it in order to pay the rent, kids' medical bills, etc. I wonder if that's what you encountered. :?:

If they were one of my neighbors and I had some proof or understanding of exactly what was going on, then yes, it would likely be something that might need to get reported. Since I really didn't know what her story was, I didn't feel it was really my place to report something. If she was just selling things because a relative died or she was moving or something, then I can understand why she wanted a quick way to unload the excess food.

In this particular case, the way it was set up and displayed, it had the feeling of something that was more along the lines of a mini store. Everything was well organized, labeled, looked new and clean. It didn't look like she was cleaning out a home, more like buying low and selling off for a profit. She also was giving everyone a clear view of her garage stockpile, which was not for sale. The impression I got was that she couponed or bought in bulk.

Whenever I have moved, I either have donated my extra food or gave it to my neighbors.

I don't think it's illegal here in California. Groceries like this usually are for sale at Flea Markets, etc. Maybe the lady was in sales for grocery stores and these were samples of products she represented or deleted items. I'm in grocery sales but I've never sold anything to anyone. I give it away to friends, neighbors and relatives or drop off at the food banks.
