I changed over from Outlook Express ( ) to Mozilla Thunderbird, and when I first retrieved my messages it went all the way back to January of 2011. Does anyone know why>

I don't use Thunderbird so I cannot give you the exact directions on this, but, it would appear that your messages have not been removed from your server after retrieving them. There is a setting for this. Go to your email account and find "properties". Usually, on "advanced" you will find a setting that says something like "remove messages from server after______ days". Change that to whatever works for you ( I leave it for a few days so if I pick up my messages on a different device - also set to leave messages a couple of days - they will remain for me to also get them on my main computer).
