I'm sorry to hear that Sue. My daughter in law developed a nut allergy during her pregnancy a year and half ago. She loved nuts and being a vegetarian used them as a protein source.

I'm sorry to hear that too--that's not good. Does anyone know how allergies develop in adults, and is there any way to reverse them? I ate wheat for years and was fine; now I have problems after eating it. It's frustrating. :?

So Cal Gal, adult allergies can have many different causes. For women those wonderful hormones of ours are a major culprit. Thyroid issues can be a factor. My endocrinologist also attributes some allergies to aging. Some allergies are outgrown, some allergies are grown into.

Oh, how awful. I'm really sorry this happened to you.

For some reason more and more people are developing SEVERE allergies to peanuts. I wonder if it has anything to do with pesticides or fertilizers that are now being used? There are kids in our ENT allergy department who have such awful allergies to peanuts that their teachers have to be armed with epinephrine (EpiPens) in case they come into contact with a peanut.

No way..... that is so sad, I didn't think someone could just become allergic!

Yeah, you can.

I loved salmon when I was a kid, but became severely allergic as an adult. It happens. You can fly below the trigger level for a long time, but once the trigger is activated, even a tiny bit can set it off.

Incidentally, Sue, don't get M & Ms. They all contain a small amount of peanut. Sixlets are a good substitute!

Chocolatl makes a good point about peanuts hiding in things. I believe that it's now required that foods be labeled as possibly containing peanuts even if they're not an ingredient but are processed on machinery that has processed other peanut containing foods. I'm an avid label reader...

I am allergic to shrimp. Went my whole life was fine eating shrimp, then one day ate a platter of shrimp and had to go to the ER. I was 30. :( The doc told me, either you are born allergic to something or develop it around 25-45 years of age. He said either side of around that age, you are good.....Not wanting to ask, but are you in that age group? Was my ER doc right?
