This one is probably too easy. But it is an interesting looking thing still used today.

My friends and I use a
1. Food processor
2. 2x4, cleaned
3. 5 gallon bucket
4. Box of kosher salt
Equals - sauerkraut!

Bea you are so right, it does look like a modern plunger! LOL at the time of people using this, they were still using out houses!

Living in MN, this is a very common item for me. I see them in thrift stores. It is Scandanavian in origin. We have lots of swedes and norwegians here in MN.
I thought was too easy, guess I took it for granted...
