I guess that is one thing about being in an overpriced area - the regular food is often just as expensive as the organic. The meat often does cost more, but not that much more (and I wait for sales on that). I just make it a habit to check the organic stuff first, then the regular and see which is on sale for the better price.

Now at places that sell only organics, I do see a pretty high price on many things. Whole Foods just opened around here and wow they can have some really steep prices. However, I found out that their regular skinless boneless chicken breasts cost exactly the same as Publix's regular non organic chicken. Their rotisserie chickens cost LESS than Publix (for a non organic bird too).

The milk costs about $1 more, and the eggs cost about the same. Sometimes I can get a great cheap price on the eggs though.

I just have to watch myself like a hawk in places like Whole Foods that tempt me to buy prepared food at every corner. Dangerous! I don't need any of that stuff. I just want the ingredients, not the pre-made foods that cost a LOT. "Organic" prepared foods to me are just the same as getting any restaurant or take-out food, but with a high price tag. But they have so many taste test booths that lure you in. I can't go in there hungry.

HF, the organic chickens here are almost double the price as with just about anything, eggs, cheese, you name it. Double + for our area. Chicken are 12+, Publix is 6. I know area to area really varies. It is outrageous.

I searched organic meat in MN. OMG there is a farm like 5 miles away that sells meat so cheaply, and its organic. Cheaper than the store. Thing is, you have to order in the spring for fall slaughter. But its CHEAP.

From their website:
We sell our beef by the whole and half. The hanging weight of a whole beef is usually between 500 and 600 pounds, and a half a beef is between 250 and 300 pounds.

Whole beef—$3.00/lb
Half beef—$3.15/lb

Our pork is also sold by the whole and half. The hanging weight for a whole pig is between 180 and 210 pounds, and half a pig is between 90 and 105 pounds.

Whole pig—$1.60/lb
Half pig—$1.65/lb

I think that is so cheap for organic meat, and you get all the things.....they also cut it into steaks, roasts, chops, hamburger, sausage, bacon, whatever you want for that price. Sounds awesome to me! Their website even says they make jerky! :D

Now I just need to plan ahead to have an empty freezer in the fall for all that meat and also a full pocket in the spring to pay for it!

No, I do not buy organic. As Felix posted, it is 3x the cost. Groceries are insanely expensive these days. I only buy meats on sale now, boneless chicken breast for 1.99 per pound. No way am I paying $4-$6 per pound for yard bird. I won't even buy fish now. Shrimp, yes...it is very inexpensive here.

Because I have huge gardens I go chemical free and eat my own veggies and fruits most of the time. So I believe that qualifies my veggies and fruits as organic. I use trap plants and complimentary plants when I plant my gardens. Works for me! I too worry about all the chemicals on foods so this is the best I can do. ;)

Jelly, now that I am up north, I have a garden. I tried down in GA, but being so blasted hot, things seemed to just burn up. I will admit, I was lax on watering, so it was probably me, but up north things just grow like weeds it seems. I had such a huge crop of things and OMG it has been wonderful to not have to buy so many things this year! :D

Dis, I feel your pain, trust me. This Fall I have lettuce, kale, cabbage, squash, maters, peppers, etc growing. My red leaf if 2' tall already. I'm having salad this week for dinner. Delicious. I can't believe fall growing. But I do agree, up north growing is different. I love the NO HOT seasons down here. I'm sure you are realisahing in veggies in the fall.
