Warning- Grapefruit

It was on the news last night that eating grapefruit and taking medications can be harmful or even fatal. This caught my attention because back in the mid `70's I was prescribed an allergy med that ended up being recalled because of deaths from the combination, it caused major liver problems.
I would check with Dr or pharm tech about meds you are taking before using grapefruit in anything...

I heard something about that a while back, I'm not a grapefruit lover and don't take pills so I guess I'm in the clear, hey thanks for the alert though ;)

our pharmacy puts the warning on the bottle, i take one that has the warning, it says do not eat grapefruit with it.

Before the warnings were on prescriptions I happened on to that information, it contains furanocoumarian which interferes with drugs to the bloodstream, especially in heart patients.

Another to watch for is Metamucil a commmonly prescribed and over the counter preparation also known as psyllium. Scientific studies indicate that it interferes with the asbsorbtion and effectivness of some meds - again especially heart meds. It needs to be taken an hour before or 2 hours after your medicatons.

Many the time over the years I sat bedside and insited the nurses/staff check out grapefuit, grapefrutit juice and metamucil - better to be thought wrong than having the meds fail.

I did know about the conflict with grapefruit and heart meds because DM's doc had warned her about this, but never knew about the metamucil. Interesting....
