The Smell of Christmas

Post by Ninya » Wed Nov 02, 2011 2:23 pm

I have seen a good few ideas for something that simmers on the stove and will perfume the house with a great Christmassy smell. I would love to do something in my cafe but it can't go on the stove as the extractor fan would just throw it on the beach LOL!
Any ideas? I really don't want to go the way of bought candles etc, would rather do something homemade.

Would a crockpot work? Any recipes you could share?

I don't have a slow cooker, Ninya, but there are many recipes online for Christmas Smells that do use one. This is a simple list of the common ingredients from Cooks.com. A google search will find others, I'm sure.

CHRISTMAS SMELLS

1 box cloves
1 box stick cinnamon
2 bay leaves
Peel of 1 lemon
Peel of 1 orange
2 qts. water

Bring to a boil and simmer.

That is almost exactly the same as what I have used. It is wonderful. I am sure the crock pot would work. It is a great smell.

Mary's recipe works really well. Another idea that I like to use is an electric tart warmer. These can be bought at Yankee Candle and they have dozens of Christmas
smelling scents.

If you don't have a Yankee Candle store near you you can order from their website. The tarts are usually $2 each but I wait until they go on sale for $1 apeice.

I'm going to try this one! I usually just throw a bunch of these type spices in a tiny saucepan and let them simmer, but I never thought to add lemon & orange peel! Thanks for posting this, Mary!

Glade also makes spice candles which I love to put in the bathrooms and bedrooms when I have company. They add a mild scent and nice ambiance and actually last quite a while. Nice when you have company and it doesn't compete with the other smells. They have pine, spice and pumpkin I think. Each year they change, but they are very nice.

I spray cologne on my light bulbs! Especially the bathroom! I use my own perfume in my bath. I am thinking of ordering these! :D

Crockpots work great. They even sell small crocks, for this purpose. Look for them at walmart, near the bottled liquid potpourri. You are supposed to put their simmering liquids in them, but any simmering liquid would work great!

Love the fresh aroma of the natural spices, often adding lemon and orange peels, as well as ginger. Prefer using the large crock pots and picked up two just for that purpose, yes they work well! Have one on the lower level as well as the main floor. While I keep a close eye I have the one on the lower level on a timer. I add salt to keep it fresh and change it weekly.

The down side is having youngsters visit, the fragrance has them sure you have a special treat in store - only to find it is the simmer pot! Must get busy baking cookies for the freezer stash so as not to completely disappoint! Have been trying to add our family favourites so my family can come here needing only do a quick click! This is so one of them! :D
