I'm getting a new KNEE!!!!!

Post by Bobbie » Mon Sep 17, 2012 3:29 pm

I'm excited and apprehensive at the same time!!!!! I'm going in for surgery a week from Wednesday. My doctor is in a new program here -- Silicon Valley Joint Replacement Center. It's at the hospital where we always go. They only do hip and knee replacements. Each patient has a "coach" -- my husband will be mine. He will stay the entire time with me. All rooms are private. We've already gone through some of the training, They want him to learn how to care for me from the get-go. This program has eliminated the need for MANY of the patients to go to a rehab center after surgery. We also do not stay in bed -- we get dressed in our regular clothes. When we are in the room during the day, there is a recliner that I will use which will allow me to work on my exercises. We have two group therapy sessions per day, plus our own one-on-one therapy session. We even get to have little games -- who can putt the golf ball the best, etc. AND I have a nice 27" flat screen TV in my room so I can watch my programs at night (I imagine I'll give in to Dave so he can watch baseball and Thursday night football - I enjoy those, too).

So far I've yet to talk to anyone who regrets having their knee replaced -- I hope I won't be the exception to that!!!!!

The only thing I can say is to make sure you do EVERYTHING your doctor tells you to, even if you don't want to, it's hard, or it hurts a little. My mother has had both of hers done, and she still limps. Not because there was anything wrong with the new knees, but because she didn't like the exercises. Had she followed direction, she would be good as new.

Good luck, speedy recovery, and enjoy your new walking abilities! :D

Good lucky Bobbie, you'll be running a marathon in no time  Seriously though it's not a walk in the park by any means but it really will give you relief from your pain and better mobilty.

Oh my -- so MANY good wishes!!! I truly appreciate the good thoughts and the advice from some. I've had two other knee surgeries -- but not replacements. The last one (almost 18 months ago) was on this same knee. Honestly, for all I went through, it probably wasn't worth it. The replacement would have probably been better --but I wasn't ready. I went to therapy for 6 weeks (3 times a week). It was grueling and that's the part I'm not looking forward to -- but I won't be released from therapy until they say I'm ready -- so yes, I KNOW I have to do the exercises. I've actually already started many of them -- since they will make my knee/leg stronger for surgery. Also a lot of "upper body" exercises so it will make using the walker -- getting in and out of bed easier. PLUS I'll have my "coach" here with me and I know he won't let me slide on ANYTHING! (Is there a divorce in our future)!!!!   Again, I appreciate all the kind postings. Once I get home (maybe even from the hospital), I'll try and check in with you all.
