Yes, the kitchen you grow up in has so many special memories. I have loved being home with my mom. Seeing the the things we used as a kid and she still uses them. (they made things better way back when) She even has a electric skillet that is older than me! It is avocado green and she said she got it when she first moved away from home! She recently told me she wrote the company and told them how wonderful their product has been and how she still has it and uses it weekly after 50 years! It is so old its not immersible in water. (no such thing back then.)

I love finding stuff like that at yard sales etc. It amazes me how so many of those older appliances, dishes, etc all still work great. So many of the brand new things I have purchased have disappointed me, so now I am going retro. Functional and a huge cuteness factor.

Heather, my mom is 74 and she has only owned one set of pots and pans! Can you even imagine? They are in great shape and still work great! I can't hardly believe that old electric skillet (frying pan) still works. When she brought it out to make a roast in, I almost fainted when I realized she still uses it! She has 4 crockpots, different sizes but she told me her old 40 year old one is still her favorite. She said her recipes get ruined in the newer ones.

Shoot...most of the appliances, pans, and dishes I use are my mom's, and most of them were wedding presents (my parents got married in 1956). :D

I still use her electric skillet and percolator coffee pot, neither one of which can be submerged in water. The pans are the ones she's had since well before I was born, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with them. Other than style, you'd think they were purchased last week.

The only small appliances I've had to replace were the blender, deep fryer, and toaster. What's funny for me is the stove and oven were built into the kitchen in 1962. Other than having to replace the occasional heating coil, the stove has never had problems. A couple of months ago, the top heating element in the oven burned out, so I haven't been able to broil. Baking works just fine. But...we had the guy come out a bit ago, and we've ordered a new oven. Turns out ours was a custom size, so they're going to have to do a bit of remodeling to fit the new one in, but that should happen within the next couple of weeks.

I love those old ovens! Someday, if I ever can have a house of my own (I have always rented), I hope I can find one left with cool old appliances intact. I even love the old retro bathrooms with the pink and black tile theme. I cringe every time I see those ripped out in decorating shows. I think - nooo - everything is in perfect working condition! Obviously style is huge factor in their decisions - but I love that style.

I love all of the old cookie cutters, Pyrex dishes, real Tupperware, etc I have found to use in my kitchen. They all have lasted so long already and I give them a real workout too. I am keeping my eye out for old crockpots and waffle irons too. I finally found a new crock I do like, but I would still love to find a really reliable old model. The old stuff was made well and meant to last. I wish that were the case now too.

Every time someone tells me I have a cool retro something-or-other, I laugh hysterically. It's not retro, it's how it is. Things are only "retro" if they are new but made to look like the original. The originals are, well, originals. :D

You are very lucky to have the originals, Felix :) I hope I didn't insult you - definitely not where I was going with that. I guess when I say "retro" I mean a certain style of the somewhat recent past.

Oh no, not offended at all. It's one of those things that always makes me giggle. :)
