Stuffed peppers with ground beef

Post by Jaclyn » Sat Jul 21, 2012 8:29 pm

I have a question. When you mix ground beef rice and tomato sauce for stuffed peppers, shouldn't the ground beef be cooked before you stuff the peppers? the recipe says to not cook? thank you

I would definitely brown the ground beef first!

I always cook it first but I only leave my peppers inthe oven for 25 minutes(I like my peppers to still hve crunch). If the recipe leaves them in the oven for a long period of time the burger will cook.

Does the recipe call for very lean meat? If so, that might be one reason it doesn't have you pre-cook it. If the meat is very greasy, you'd want to brown it first to get rid of the excess grease first, so it isn't oozing out all over. But very lean meat wouldn't have that problem.

The length of cooking time should also give you a clue too -a longer cook time would likely be assuming the meat went in raw.

I think it tastes better if you brown it first.

I have NEVER cooked the rice or the meat first.

I also never blanch my peppers either. But I don't use HUGE peppers either. I use a pepper small-medium which I find is a perfect single serving size.

If I only can find BIG peppers and cut them in half and serve them that way; which I actually what I prefer, but not necessary

I do like to sweat my onions and bit along with some garlic, just a minute or two. Then I add that to the meat, rice, petite or diced tomatoes, worcestershire sauce, a little broth, and seasoning.

Stuff, cover with sauce and a little water in the bottom of the pan; and bake.
I always bake covered, but the last 15 I remove the foil or lid, add a bit more sauce on top; and sometimes cheese

NEVER HAD A BAD PEPPER OR ANY COMPLAINTS.

Thanks for your replys everyone, seems some people have different ideas about cooking the beef however I went ahead and cooked it first and the peppers turned out well I'm sure they would have been great using uncooked beef, I may try that next time ;)
