Bread Baking Equipment

Post by Galley_Wench » Thu Dec 01, 2011 2:21 pm

Over the years I've added a few things to the galley that makes bread baking easier . . . number one on my list is a kitchen scale! Don't know how I lived without it. I'm continually amazed at how far off a measuring cup of flour is when it's weighed. . . it's usually a 3/4 of an ounce or more too much. I've already worn one out, so this time I spent a little more and got an OXO.

The other thing I've found that I LOVE are these French bread and baguette pans. You form the dough, place it on the pan to rise, then slide into the hot oven. No more wrestling to get the dough in the oven without deflating!

Just a couple of hours ago I used my new baguette pan for the first time. They turned out great although a little too fat (just used too much dough). I think the next time I will make the 2 baguettes and a couple of hamburger buns from the batch of dough. Love the pan - I got it on sale at a local hardware store for $6.

I would not be without a scale either GW. My bread is so consistent now that I weigh the flour.

Ohhh I have to find that baguette pan - they will likely have it at the Kitchen Shop but maybe I should head to some hardware stores before I do that! Next city shop!

Wouldn't want to be without my scale either! :D

I could just cry. Last fall I passed on a FREE baguette pan. Never thought I would use it and now I want one. :(

Ditto on the kitchen scale.

Also love the dough rising bucket. http://www.kingarthurflour.com/shop/ite ... ing-bucket

Gerry, try a Rona Store. They just had a Paderno sale and that's where I got mine. I don't know if the sale is over yet or not. Otherwise the Paderno store in Regina should have them.

Thanks for the info! Don't think I will get to Rona this week as it's on the other end of town - but the kitchen store at Northgate has Paderno - love Panderno. Have appointments hope there's a a sale on next week!

I've been going through cookbooks - and playing with yeast breads this week! Should have had someone handy with a camera - some real winners just begging for a photo! :D

What no one has said a KA mixer or bread machine. lol. I love my KA mixer for making bread. I would have given up on making bread if I didn't have it. It was my main reason for buying KA. I also have a bread machine but it came after the mixer, so I never got the hang of using it for bread.

I'm with you on the KA . . . couldn't live without mine either. Expensive, but the best kitchen investment I've ever made. The bread machine was essential on the boat, where a KA would have been impractical, but here at home it takes up space in the cupboard. Took it up to the mountain house . . will use it up there since I brought the KA down here (Tucson).

The KA was definitely on the top of my list for many years - I think I have had it since 1994. I don't bake so much anymore and the bread machine now keeps us in bread, so it just doesn't get used as regularly. It still has it's home on my countertop though, and I'd never part with it.
