Clean that dishwasher!

Post by mahoo » Sun Nov 13, 2011 12:30 am

Forget buying those expensive new "dishwasher cleaners". A package of regular, ordinary Tang run through your dishwasher will leave it sparkling & smell free. (Works great on toilets too btw)
Rather frightening when you think about drinking it.

Mahoo, thank you for posting this. I was looking at my dishwasher & not sure what to do. So this is the "orange tang" that went to outer space? I just throw it in the bottom of the dishwasher & run it? Going to the store today & will pick some up.

G'day ladies,

But never forget the miracle chemical that seems to be able to do just about anything - bicarbonate of soda. Cheap as chips and works like a dream. You can even drink it if you need to burp - just a little bit in water of course.

regards, John :D

Another thing you can to to make your dishwasher sparkle is to use citric acid instead of the Tang. It's the citric acid in the Tang that cleans and it's cheaper. You can buy it in the canning section of your grocery store. About a couple of tablespoons.

Sooo crazy that you posted this. I had never ever ever cleaned a dishwasher before in all the homes I lived in but this past weekend I couldn't take it anymore. I pulled out the bottom rack and cleaned it out with borax/washing soda 50/50 mix. It came clean easily with no scrubbing required. There was probably 10 years of yuck buildup and it was just gross.

I have been using the Tang trick too - I was about to post about it here too. It works wonders!

I started using it a month or so ago when I was having a huge issue with my dishes all coming out with what appeared to be a white coating on them. I scrubbed at them and it would not come off. I tried all sorts of other methods - bleach, vinegar, baking soda, elbow grease, etc. I even bought a dishwasher cleaner. It might have cleaned my dishwasher in other ways, but I was still having the problem and my dishes looked ruined. Even my stainless steel was going in rinsed and coming out with a coating - something just wasn't right.

I switched brands of dishwasher soap, no luck. The Tang worked! Everything comes out sparkling now and nothing comes out with any hint of orange color at all (even white plastic comes out white). I just fill my second dishwasher soap drawer (the one that does not shut) with the Tang and put my dishwasher detergent in the container that closes. Then I run it as normal - works great.
