Butternut Squash
Post
by Isabella'sCanOpener » Fri Nov 21, 2014 10:56 am
Hi Folks,
Anyone have any opinion or experience using 5 Spice Powder with butternut squash? I have been tasked with making the squash for Thanksgiving and I do not have any Allspice on hand (sadly, I really can't afford to buy some at this time) and I am considering using 5 spice as a substitute.
Thanx in advance for your help.

I think 5 spice powder would work perfectly with butternut squash. A bit of butter and brown sugar with the five spice and Yummers!!!

That spice has a million uses as long as you don't over spice it is very strong.
I would say yes to your question I think it would go great on butternut squash just watch your amounts.

I think adding a little brown sugar will definitely tone down the spice; as QB mentioned using it.
It would go very good with the squash.

I agree thats a very strong spice so you might try toning it down by adding some cinnamon.

Thanx for your rapid replies. We all seem to be thinking alike on this, so I am going to give it a shot. I plan on roasting the squash whole and then using the flesh afterwards. I will judge on the amount (and type) of sweetener I use based on the flavor after roasting. Butter is a must, but the amount will be determined. I will use the 5 Spice in moderation as I want it to taste like Squash and something, not the other way around.
AND, for once, I will take notes on what I do so that hopefully I will have a recipe to publish after the holiday. Usually I just wing it based on experience which doesn't translate well into a recipe. So this time I will pay attention to details just in case it actually works.
Thanks again for your input.

5 spice may contain szechuan peppercorns which may cause a mild numbing effect on the palate, just in case anyone notices it (it will depend on how much you use).
