Re: Moving, need to use up ingredients fast
KC, United moved me from Illinois to California and they were adamant about no liquids or food of any kind. In that move, they knew because they packed the house. (Company move, I wasn't paying.) It was right in the contract that they would not move liquids, foods or anything flammable. The company rep was careful to tell me that included all bathroom, kitchen and garage liquids.Kchurchill5 wrote:Is that a standard rac, or state rules. I remember when I moved, they said it was OK. But I had to mark the boxes top do not flip, etc. you know what I mean. I didn't do ope things. just canned goods and boxes. I did do alcohol too, but I marked it misc kitchen. They may have given me wrong info. But, if in a sealed box, they said that was fine.
NO, they would not transport, any cold food, or coolers.
Curious.
Bekins moved me last year and it was the same story but I did the packing. I taped all of the dry goods closed and put canned goods in smaller boxes. The liquids we moved in our own pickups.
It may be company policy from mover to mover, I really don't know.

It may be individual movers, who knows. It would be nice if everyone had the same rules wouldn't it.
I do remember nothing flammable too.
HF, if you have your grill. You will need to take your own propane tank, I remember movers wouldn't take that.

We have been thinking about that one. I think our best option is to either sell the thing cheaply (it is almost full) when we have our yard sale, and if it doesn't sell, then give it to a neighbor. We have absolutely no extra space in the car, so anything bulky like that will just have to left behind, unfortunately. Very frustrating - we also plan to sell the mower, since it will not get used anyway once we move. A lot of stuff to unload in a short time. I really hope we can get in a yard sale before we move - way too many rainy weekends so far.Kchurchill5 wrote:Thx for the info, I have a friend moving as well. NOT, until Sept. But she asked me and we were talking about this thread.

Mary - I liked the idea of mixing some of the couscous with the frozen veggies, although I might do that and serve it as a cold salad. Thanks for the idea.

Also, do a garage sale 8-noon, before rain hits. Say, must sell, moving. Put it on Craigs List and the FREE local ads. That is what I did and had 50 people lined up outside at 7:30. List big items. That way you are not tied up the entire day.
Lawn mower try craigs list vs garage sale, I did well on that.
Keep some lawn stuff, I sold most; when moving into my Dads place, and had to rebuy almost everything. A blower keep, small chain saw keep, clippers keep.
Trust me, you will use them at some point. Besides, the moving company will take them
And if you don't sell the lawnmower, take it and sell it there. You can always put it in the moving truck.

For my canned goods, I have gone through about half of what I had. I still have some pears, diced tomatoes, tomato sauce (plain), a few cans of chickpeas, tomato soup, cream of asparagus and cream of broccoli soup, plus a few others I can't recall right now. Some boxes of chicken broth too.
I have corn, cranberries, and cauliflower left in the freezer as well. Still plenty of condiments to use up - mustard, ketchup, orange marmalade, strawberry jelly, apricot jam, some Asian sauces, stuff like that. I still have plenty of sushi rice and brown rice to use up, as well as some egg noodles. Peanut butter and plenty of assorted oils, vinegars etc as well. Still have rum and Irish cream and sake to use up.
I still haven't made much of a dent in my baking supplies though - I have several types of flour, plus a box each of red velvet, spice, and orange cake mix, some instant pudding mixes, yeast, baking powder, etc. The flour is the main problem - I'd like to use up what I have so I can wash out the containers and ship them. I can put some into ziploc baggies if I need to, but I'd rather just use it up.

This isn't a plug for my cake, but it does use up 3 cups of flour, uses cocoa powder and its from scratch! So it will help use up baking items. Lovely tasting cake! I adore it. http://www.recipezazz.com/recipe/crazy-cake-4465
