Ninya, if you enjoyed the Dragon Tattoo books, have you read Child 44 (sorry, can't think of author)? It is not for the squeamish (but doesn't seem that you are :D) and I found the writing style to be similar to Larsson's (who unfortunately won't be writing any more books). Very strange book ~ but I don't want to give a thing away!
"Child 44 is a thriller novel by British writer Tom Rob Smith, and features disgraced MGB Agent Leo Demidov, who investigates a series of gruesome child murders in Stalin's Soviet Union."

I enjoyed this book!

I feel your pain CoffeeB. I read a lot of historical novels & the language can be very different. Usually what happens is that I get with the flow after a couple of chapters. This did not happen with "Jane Eayre" a book that has been said to be outstanding for years. Then again remember I did not like "Paris Wife"!

Since I've already seen the Jane Eayre movie, I knew how the story was going to go, it's just her way of speaking is so foreign to me (I'm a simple gal) that it wasn't an enjoyable read. I"m hoping the historical novel that the librarian suggested will be a much easier read. I"ll keep you posted.

I have always enjoyed the Librarian's recommendations. CoffeeB what did she recommend?

The same book...just in a different translation or edition maybe? She called it the historical novel.

I just finished The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes, and have just started The Help. Both very good books (but very different from each other).

Thanks CoffeeB. I wonder which one the library is going to give me?

Lime, I enjoyed The Help.

"Julian Barnes's 'The Sense of an Ending has the markings of a classic of English literature. It is exquisitely written, subtly plotted."

163 pages & he received "Booker Prize" for the novel.

Thanks for the recommendation. I have added it to my library list.

I broke down and did it. Downloaded Kindle for Android to my phone so I could read at work (it was less obvious I wasn't paying attention to the show, as I've been in full audience view for days). Still don't like it, but I did find a fairly decent book for free from Amazon.

The Son of Man by Charles W. Johnson. The premise is that this secret society of people has managed to clone Jesus. The story line certainly held my attention (there's murder, there's a pedophile priest, there's a meteor heading for Earth that will wipe out the entire US, there's love, there's miracles), but the book itself was written very choppily. It might have been the format, but every once in a while it felt like I'd suddenly started reading a completely different story, and many of the plot lines never really related to each other at all, except on a very remote level.

Turns out, this is the first book in a series, so that makes sense. Certainly I'll be looking to see if I can get the rest of them from the library (they cost $2.99 each to download from Amazon, and I wasn't impressed enough to actually pay).
