Sour Pickles/Gherkins
Post
by Tink » Sun Oct 23, 2011 2:12 pm
I'm on the hunt for a tart gherkin/cucumber/dill pickles recipe. Being British I love the tart taste of our gherkins/pickled onions that you usually buy in the fish and chip shops all over the U.K. Here in California what's on offer at the grocery store is the sweet dill variety and to be honest they just don't cut it for me.
I know they have sour pickles over here in the States but I have not come across any, unless I want to order them on-line and just the shopping alone costs an arm and a leg.
So, if anyone can help I'd be really grateful.

Tink, I had bought someones dill pickles from a person that lives near my Brothers house. OMG.. if you like tart, you would love these. Every time I took a bite, I puckered up and smacked my hand on the table....but I just couldn't stop eating them. They were dill pickle spears. The ingredients said tumeric, mustard seed, vinegar, sugar, and a few more things that are not coming to mind right now. I am thinking of getting my Brother to go over there and see about getting her recipe. If I get it Tink I will sure keep you in mind.

I buy the cornichons from World Market regularly Heather (the brand I buy comes from France), and they do taste exactly like the tart pickled gherkins I can get in the U.K. To be honest because they are tiny I could eat a quarter of the jar in one sitting and at over $4.00 a pop it's really pricey.
So, to be economical that's why I'm looking for a tart/sour recipe to be able to make here at home, I'm pretty sure I could get the cukes from the farmers market here in town when their in season and I pretty much have the basic equipment, except the canning jars. Keeping my fingers crossed someone comes up with a good recipe.

I have asked my brother or his wife to go where I bought mine. As soon as they get a chance one of them will go and get me the lady's name of who made them and phone number so I could call her for her recipe..you will surely love these pickles Tink...
If my SIL would of told my brother what I asked prior he would of asked for me already. He just found out I wanted this information on Sunday. And he saw the owner of the store there at his Fire Hall meeting on Saturday...If he would of known he would of asked then. But one of them will do it real soon, they go by his place every day, just a matter of being a time when the place is open. I will keep you updated Tink..

There was a link to a recipe just above the link for buying them. The hardest part will be getting the right size cucumbers (the recipe suggests buying the smallest you can find and then cutting them, using the same brine you would for the mini ones).
