Gerry, your weather forecast carried over here :? darnit.

I called hubby last night from camp as I always do before going to bed and he said he ate all of the goodies I packed him for his weekend lunch so he planned on ordering out for tonight.

Well it just poured today, but I still wanted to make something special for him so he wouldn't have to order some junk food meal.

I posted this already at the food photo forum but thought I should share it here also, just because...

Anyhoots, I dropped it off to him at work on my way back from camp. He was just going in to work and he was tickled as he ran out of lunch foods and was just going to order out.

I tagged two of these at the Alphabet Soup Recipe Tag Game and the last one is my recipe.

Now the sweetest thing about this is that he had no idea I was bringing him something to eat and when I got home I had this lovely little note in the kitchen with a little rose bud on it from our rosebush. Just because.....Sheesh, I feel so loved.....

I don't really have a recipe to offer, but I would like to share what I was told at a recent family party -- to which I took a large pot of pinto beans and deviled eggs. Both are no brainers for me, so I'm always ready to bring both but am always on the list for deviled eggs -- whatever the occasion.

So, I received so many compliments on the eggs that I sighed and asked "What's so special about my deviled eggs?" The consensus was quick and loud. My deviled eggs are just plain old eggs . . . no fancy flavors or surprise ingredients. Surprisingly those in agreement were male and female, young and old.

I guess people just want familiar flavors. I never add anything to the egg yolks but sour cream, mayonnaise (Hellman's Light), Dijon, salt and pepper, and a dusting of paprika or dill. Years ago, a vigorous dispute over whether the eggs should have dill or sweet pickles led me to omit both in the interest of peace in the family, and it seems that both sides of the argument are happy with the result, as are strangers to the family.

Of the 48 halves that I took to the party (for 12 adults and 8 children), nary a one was left.

You are so right Mary, the old faves are always a hit!!! Good ole' pot'o'beans, coleslaws, ceasar salads, pickled eggs, macaroni salad, potato salad........ They are always the first to go.

Those are all great pot-luck recipes Gerry. I have yet to try Derf's sangria recipe.

Devilled eggs with Hellmans as well as all those old fashioned recipes are family gathering favourites here too! You two would feel right at home at our family reunions. Have been told repeatedly to get those recipes down on paper ... seeing as I am planning a family cookbook soon would be good!

Now about those Pinto Beans Mary - that's one I need to add to my cookbook! :D

The pinto beans recipe is already here on the site, Gerry. And of course, it comes with a story . . . .

When I married the youngest of six boys, I was learning to cook from cookbooks and didn't have a clue how to feed a crowd of men with appetites that astounded those who didn't know them. They were all tall, lean, and ready to eat a plateful and return for seconds -- and thirds. Their mother, a wise woman indeed, had brought them up on protein and fiber rich beans which were budget wise and plentiful. When times were lean, those kids could always look forward to a hot meal.

So I tackled the family favorite. Boy was I young and optimistic. My "pot" of beans disappeared before I could blink my eyes and was soon doubled and tripled for family gatherings. Over the years, I modified my seasonings and started cooking the beans in the oven so they had constant temperature and didn't require watching. Eventually, my beans were the dish they remembered, and the recipe was expanded to include southwestern flavors, navy beans for Senate Bean Soup and black eyed peas for New Years.

Here's the basic recipe: http://www.recipezazz.com/recipe/basic- ... variations

I've found that the times are sometimes off and the beans need to cook for even longer (perhaps because the beans are older). Also, they are even better when cooked and refrigerated overnight. For smaller amounts, I'm sure a slow cooker would do the job, but I'm a creature of habit and still use the oven for just a single batch.
