May Long Weekend here...

Post by Axe » Sun May 20, 2012 12:04 pm

Well, here in Canada, we call it the "May Two Four" weekend. (Beer reference fully intended)

It's also the 'Unofficial' weekend everybody get's their gardens planted.

Any special ideas going on for 'Canning Season'?

I've been looking over some recipes that we don't usually buy/grow, and we have decided to plant some unusual things for us. Like: Zucchini, eggplant, brussel sprouts, purple sweet peppers, habanero peppers and a few more.

As far as the 'usuals' go... we have 240 tomato plants in and the garlic is growing like crazy!

Have you decided to do anything unusual or out of your 'normal' this year?

240 tomato plants ... who are you feeding? Wow, a I impressed

Nope, summer done here is not good - unless you have a green house with controlled temps. Me, just my maters which will be done by late june july and then some peppers also done about the same time. NO planting until late Aug (labor day) just doesn't work, TOO hot and usually TOO wet. Hard as a individual grower in those months.

I will plant beans, zucchini, , small cucumbers and maters this fall which is out best planting season. I want to plant a mango tree, but haven't got permission yet from the association.

I did grow my own scallions, and they did fantastic. I loved those.

Hello Axe, have to love a gardener and grower that allows there are 240 tomato plants growing in his garden! Saskatchewan here and my tomatoes are still in the greenhouse. In my former country garden in the beautiful Qu Appelle I gardened and canned and loved every minute of it. Hundred and hundreds of jars!

Living in Saskatchewan had me searching for tomato varieties that would do well here, a plant breeder/grower kept me well supplied with both new and old fashioned varieties which I tested in my valley garden. One year saw to a hundred varieties - how good to meet someone who knows just how that can happen. As for the extras - I shared!

Happy May Long Weekend - just printed off your soup recipes, have never found a Mulligatawny or Cauliflower soup we didn't love! :D
