What's For Dinner?-December 2012
Re: What's For Dinner?-December 2012

I ended up making potato corn chowder. It was really thick and sooo good. It seemed to be too thin, so I made a cornstarch slurry, and OMG it got thick! I sort of really liked it that way. Might do that again next time!
Spent all day shopping... Trying to find something decent for my mother....ended up getting her several small things, and then tomorrow I will spend all day making her kitchen towels with crotchet toppers to hang on her stove. I was out of ideas and sick of shopping.

I bought things to make sausage mushroom stuffing/dressing and I took out a turkey breast today, so that will be Christmas Eve dinner. Then out to my moms for Christmas day dinner. She told me this morning, she still hasn't settled on a menu! But she is thinking of a roast with mashed potatoes and gravy. Sounds good to me.

Shadows, ham sounds so darn good. I was watching some show tonight and they were pouring honey and sugar over the cooked ham and then using a torch to turn it into a glaze. OMG I so wanted some ham!
Ninner sorry about your broken items! Cats are cute, but such pains in the lower regions!

Your corn spud chowder sounds good. I always love that soup.
I also love potato skins, especially for New Years Eve or Day to nibble on. Especially with all the football games coming up. I do the basics, onions, bacon, cheese, chives; but, they are also really good with a chorizo and manchego cheese stuffing. My poker buddies love them. And the filling - put in a baggie and freeze. The texture changes a bit; but, delicious when added to soup; a natural thickener and flavor too.
Shadows ... yep, we all made it!!

Yes, 2:30, but that is the morning, and since I'm up. Why Not?
I fell asleep at 10, due to NO sleep recently; and then up at 2. That's pretty much it for me; I guess I could put my kitchen back together after my tiling event. But the tile looks good, especially after the new cabinets.
Well, not much cooking today, not even bread. All my shopping is done, so I'm set.
Today ...
Classic scalloped potatoes (I guess I will have to post it), with ham (freezer stash); NO, cheese, just a simple mix of spuds, a few onions, thyme, salt, pepper, flour, butter, and milk. Greens from my garden in some type of salad

Christmas is at my house in the morning, so I doubt I'll have time to come back until the hordes leave and I'm settled into my recliner with a glass or three of good white wine. Dinner, however, is potluck as per usual with my family. Someone always brings something we didn't discuss, but these are the things I know will be making an appearance:
Baked ham with flat bread for optional sandwiches
Sour Cream Potato Casserole
Shrimp Salad
Relish tray with dill pickles, sweet pickles, pepperoni sticks, summer sausage sticks, pepper jack cheese, cheddar and Swiss
Variety crackers with various cheese spreads (store bought, my sister doesn't cook)
Deviled eggs
Some kind of pinwheels (my sister usually does cream cheese and deli roast beef)
Lemon Meringue pie
Cherry pie
Holiday Punch
And I'm doing a cookie tray: Cream Cheese Walnut Drop Cookies, White Chocolate Pumpkin Spice Cookies, Soft Molasses Spice Cookies, Oreo Truffles, Cherry Pie Filling Bread and my Grandma Brown's Gingerbread

Shadow, back sometime ago we were headed North/home & stopped overnight in a very small village. We asked the front desk where we could have dinner. They recommended the only restaurant in town. I ordered the ham dinner. Not knowing at the time I was pregnant. I will tell you this was one of the best meals I have ever had & in fact finished my dinner then asked the lady if I could have another one, lol.
Dissie, thank you for the invite & again how I would love to be there. Nice to have brothers who provide fresh fish. Fish here is so limited.
Felix, your dinner today sounds very good. I like ham but Dd not so much. I think the idea of everyone bringing something is such a good idea. When my Mother & MIL were with us they would also bring dishes, what a help that was. Now it is just me doing all the cooking. I have tried to change the Christmas meal over the years but have received much disappointment from the family. It will be the same as always. Roast turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes, frozen corn (this is their favorite item), a recipe of mine which is a fresh crumb mix veg dish, fresh rolls. Dessert to be provided by guests. I have not received any cookies this year so if you have any leftovers, please send them my way?
Church, I like potato pancakes, scalloped potatoes & potato skins. Then I am a carb girl.
I can't beleive all the posts in the middle of last night in this thread. Some of you getting up & others just going to bed.
I am going to do my final grocery shopping this morning. I need to check my list. Wait for the kids to get up. Then I will decide on dinner which depends on how many will be here. I have done all my wrapping except for Dd which I will complete today. One gift still to be delivered which I will get one of the boys to do.
Since there seems to be a few dead bodies laying around here that returned from last nights kids party, I will make 2 frittats with toast. I have enough stuff in the frig to put that together.
Have a wonderful Sunday my friends!

I made my fruitcake last night and now I just have 1-2 more cookies on my list to bake. I will probably go out and get my holiday foods bought today for my Christmas meal. I have been trying to get that fridge cleared out, but it is very hard with just the two of us here eating.
A few of the local sushi places are closed as of today, so my idea of having sushi on Christmas Eve might not work, so I am currently trying to figure out another plan.
