Pizza Hotdish Casserole

Hotdish or casserole? Is there really a difference... it's like saying slow cooker or crockpot. There may be some who would make a really big deal out of these two. But me? I just love this recipe cause it is crazy good, easy to make and my fussy eater daughter LOVES it! So, when RZ member Dissie cooked up this recipe on our site, she chose to use the term "hotdish" instead of crockpot or slow cooker. And I love it!!! Just the name: pizza hotdish. When I took my first bite after mixing everything up, scooping the ingredients into a pan and finally pulling it out of the oven... I got to say. I was wowed. It was almost as though I took my favourite pizza and shoved it into a food processor and scooped it into a bowl. That sounds all wrong! But tastes so incredibly right. So, what's the final word for this pizza hotdish casserole? Pizza in a bowl. Uh, yes please!

Ingredients
  • 1 pound ground beef (or italian sausage)
  • 1 yellow onion diced
  • 1 bell pepper, diced
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1 bag (16 ounce) dry egg noodles
  • 1 package (8 ounce) pepperoni
  • 2 cans (24 ounces each) spaghetti sauce (or use your favorite homemade)
  • 2 tablespoons dried oregano (pinched between fingers to release flavor)
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar (optional, we like a sweeter spaghetti sauce)
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons dried basil (pinched between fingers to release flavor)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 tablespoon crushed fennel seeds
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 375°. Start water to boil noodles. When boiling, add noodles and cook until ready. Do not overcook noodles.
  2. Meanwhile brown hamburger with onions, peppers and garlic. Add crushed fennel seeds after a few minutes of browning and continue to brown. Drain grease.
  3. In a large bowl place drained hamburger and add spaghetti sauces, oregano, sugar, basil, garlic powder, 3/4 of the pepperoni, and 1/2 cup mozzarella, and 1/2 cup cheddar. Mix well and set aside. (Be sure to separate the pepperoni when addding it.) Noodles should be done by now, drain the noodles and add to the spaghetti sauce mixture.
  4. Pour mixture into a greased 9x13 pan. Sprinkle remaining cheeses on top and decorate with the leftover pepperoni. (like the top of a pizza.)
  5. Bake for 30-40 minutes until bubbly and cheese is just starting to brown.
