Definitely agree Deepster. Fried egg sandwich on a cold late night was truly comforting. Warm Vernos with a shot of bourbon, honey, and lemon. Even young, a little bourbon I could have. That with an egg sammy was delicious!

When I think of comfort foods, I think of casseroles, and plenty more. I asked my dh and he immediately said potato corn chowder, makes him think of home.
I tend to think of comfort foods as meaning a heavier meal. I mean no one ever says a salad is comfort food. I am not big on sweets, so it wouldn't be that for me. I think maybe a big bowl of chili or soup on a cold day would be pure comfort for me.

This has been very interesting for me! I have to admit, I was getting a little annoyed when every time I post a casserole several people insist on calling it comfort food even though that was not what I called it, nor is it what I consider comfort food. But I see that many of you do, so I guess I'll have to adjust my attitude on it (it'll be like any other pet peeve, where it gets under my skin and makes me crazy, but since it's acceptable to so many others I'll have to learn to deal with it...like spelling "fridge" as "frig", even though that second word means something COMPLETELY different

. Thank you!

To me comfort food, as said by some already, is down home simple cooking! Often they will bring back a childhood memory - a dish that Mom made. It is often high carb and comes piping hot to the table - Baked Beans with weiners, Macaroni & Cheese, Scalloped Potatoes, Good home made soup,
Perogie casserole, Chicken & Dumplings and yes Felix most casseroles.
Of course on my list of comfort foods Hamburgers would be right up there.

I'm not going to adjust my attitude!

I HATE it when people use the term "comfort food" to mean "comfortable food" or ordinary family cooking. That leaves us with no phrase for what "comfort food" actually means.
We word geeks have such a heavy burden to bear!
