What's going on?
What's up?
Re: What's going on?

Glad to see you noticed and thought to ask about it.
We're trying an experiment with a mix of top visited recipes and a few newer ones that have videos.
I'd love to hear your feedback.
Occasionally, we'd be getting some very unappealing images and on the homepage, so we're trying to improve the first impression, to see if people will be inclined to look around more.
It's a small sample size so far, but the video recipes are getting many times more views than before. The average time on the page is up slightly.
I'd love to hear what you think we should do.

I prefer the switch-outs every time I open the website.

This encourages participation not based on quality, some folks just don't have expensive equipment to produce studio quality photos.
Limiting to just the "best" will make folks feel left out.
Re: What's going on?
We still need to figure out a way to help the better images get more exposure, as it helps more people stick around long enough to want to participate.
Some of the default feature images on some recipes are from many years ago, when digital images just weren't as good. It's not the fault of the person taking the photo, it's the best possible at that time. Now a phone can take a better photo than an expensive camera from 10 years ago.
So agreed, we want to be inclusive. We also want good images to help recipes get tried by new people. And the site to get tried by new people. As it is, over 150k people per month come to the site and less than 5 create an account & use it to post, review, or save a recipe.
We're in the process of improving the display image quality of existing recipes. It should reduce the 'fuzziness' somewhat.
Maybe we should open a separate discussion about how people would like to be able to update & improve feature images? What do you think?

I agree that we can get the members back, and for that, I'm talking to members. to make sure we're creating a place people want to be. I'm making sure they know their opinion counts and that we're investing in Zazz.
We were able to update the images on the recipes today. The main image should be clearer. If you see any issues or have any feedback, please let us know.
