What's going on?

Post by lovinretirement » Sat Jan 21, 2023 10:21 am

Seems like the photos of recipes on the home page haven't changed in a few days. It used to change every time I opened it up.
What's up?

Hi :)
Glad to see you noticed and thought to ask about it.
We're trying an experiment with a mix of top visited recipes and a few newer ones that have videos.
I'd love to hear your feedback.

Occasionally, we'd be getting some very unappealing images and on the homepage, so we're trying to improve the first impression, to see if people will be inclined to look around more.

It's a small sample size so far, but the video recipes are getting many times more views than before. The average time on the page is up slightly.

I'd love to hear what you think we should do. :)

I prefer the switch-outs every time I open the website.

Thanks Sheila. Can you tell me what about that you prefer?

I'm not Shelia but I will tell you that all of us from the Food Photo Forum have encourage everyone to take photos of their recipes and those they make no matter the quality of the photos, everyone has a beginning.
This encourages participation not based on quality, some folks just don't have expensive equipment to produce studio quality photos.
Limiting to just the "best" will make folks feel left out.

I hear you and I agree. And I appreciate the feedback.

We still need to figure out a way to help the better images get more exposure, as it helps more people stick around long enough to want to participate.

Some of the default feature images on some recipes are from many years ago, when digital images just weren't as good. It's not the fault of the person taking the photo, it's the best possible at that time. Now a phone can take a better photo than an expensive camera from 10 years ago.

So agreed, we want to be inclusive. We also want good images to help recipes get tried by new people. And the site to get tried by new people. As it is, over 150k people per month come to the site and less than 5 create an account & use it to post, review, or save a recipe.

We're in the process of improving the display image quality of existing recipes. It should reduce the 'fuzziness' somewhat.

Maybe we should open a separate discussion about how people would like to be able to update & improve feature images? What do you think?

"As it is over 150k people per month come to the site and less than 5 create an account & use it to post, review, or save a recipe." I am amazed to hear that Dave! To think our members have built up a collection of recipes to attract that many people is awesome, now if we could see many of our members back participating, encourage those who are stopping by to create an account, post recipes and reviews just think to the numbers that would make!

Yes, it's something the members can all be very proud of. Sadly, the number of people is slowly going down from it's peak a couple of years ago. So some changes are needed and my approach is to experiment with things.

I agree that we can get the members back, and for that, I'm talking to members. to make sure we're creating a place people want to be. I'm making sure they know their opinion counts and that we're investing in Zazz.

We were able to update the images on the recipes today. The main image should be clearer. If you see any issues or have any feedback, please let us know.

Promo and advertising.
You can't expect people to know the site is here if you don't tell them.
Yeah, I know, it costs money. And free promo takes very hard work.

Can you give us examples of Promo & Advertising you've seen work?
