I use the heels of bread to sop up excess grease from a pan of beef that I have just browned up. Easier than using a spoon that might slosh grease everywhere, and it is easy to toss the slice of bread to the birds, who appreciate the fat soaked bread.

Nice idea! I have a few feathered friends that I am sure would love that.

Rice ...

If cooking for just 1 or 2 people, I love the quick cooking bags of rice. just enough for 2 people and quick to use. But, they are expensive and I am sure have preservatives as well.

Cook up a big batch of rice. Like a whole bag. Cool on a sheet tray, then bag it up. I like to put 2 servings per bag. This is a great way to portion control as well. I like 2/3 cup per person (just how I like it). Seal the bags and freeze.

Then thaw, open the bag and pour into a bowl, and 2 minutes in the microwave ... rice! It comes out nice and fluffy, and no work.

I even freeze some in the snack bags. Perfect when I only want to add a little to stuff my cubanelle peppers, or for stuffing into portabellos, or add to a lettuce wrap, or even a taco or black beans.

When greasing baking pans with shortening, an easy way to keep it out of your fingernails is to cut up 4x4-inch squares of wax paper to scoop the shortening with and smear it on the pans.

When flouring baking pans for chocolate cake, don't use flour but use baking/unsweetened cocoa instead and you won't have the white powder on the edges of your baked cake.

Very nice Sue, love the cocoa tip ...

Don't throw away butter wrappers. That little bit in there is great to butter a pan or casserole dish. I often leave just a 'smidge' in there to grease something.

Works great!!

A burn can be soothed easily with mustard. Cold right out of the fridge. Don't run under cold water, just grab your bottle of mustard, and it takes the pain right out. Leave it on until it dries, by then it will no longer hurt. Wash off and you are good to go!

My ex was a cook and he shared this with me. Really works. Supposed to stop it from blistering too.

Another Tip of the Day!!

One of my favorite things to keep in the house.
"Brown Paper Lunch Bags"

They are cheap, and great to have on hand.

- If you roast peppers ... rather than messing up a bowl and using plastic wrap. Use a bag.
- Need to flour or making a bread for chicken or pork, etc. Use a bag.
- Ripen - avocados, bananas, peaches, apricots, etc.
- Store mushrooms in them for longer life in the fridge.
- Make luminaries with them for holidays or special events.
- Line flower pots or mesh/wire baskets
- Great for compost piles
- Dry herbs in them
- If frying chicken, put them in the paper bag to drain, but also keep warm.

And hundreds of other uses.

Rub a shelled walnut on dings in your wood furniture. It covers them up nicely!
