Pinot Grigio & Sauvignon Blanc

Post by MaMere » Thu Nov 03, 2011 5:11 pm

Help!
I know nothing of this particular wine, but, my hairdresser loves it. This is what I want to get her for Christmas, so, could you help me with finding a really good Pinot and/or Sauvignon Blanc, I am totally helpless in this arena of these wines, and hoping that 25-30 is a decent enough price to pay for a good bottle?

Thanks Much!

Wine pricing differs vastly depending on where you live, but you can get some pretty darn fine varieties of both of those starting at around $12.00 per bottle.

Yellow Tail (Australia) makes a really good Pinot Grigio. I've never been disappointed in any of their wines, and they usually run about $15.00 regular price. Around here, it goes on sale fairly regularly for $3-$5 less.

I'm really partial to wines out of the Kim Crawford vineyard (New Zealand) as well. Their Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is one of my favourites, in fact (as well as their unoaked chardonnays). Usually runs about $15.00. To the best of my knowledge, they don't make a pinot grigio.

Those are usually found just about anywhere, so you shouldn't have trouble picking up a bottle at wherever near you sells wine.

My other favourite wineries are all in the Fair Play area in the Sierra Nevada mountains, and almost always have to be ordered directly from them online. Shipping is NOT cheap. But you can't go wrong with something from Fitzpatrick Winery, Oakstone Winery, Perry Creek Winery, or Windwalker Vineyards.

Thank you very much LtE and felix~ this is exactly the kind of lists for me to review, and Felix, love that you have experience with this particular wine.
Very helpful!

I don't know where you live, but Erath Winery (Oregon) makes a fabulous mid-priced pinot gris (grigio=gris) that is like buttah!

Yellow tail is a nice medium to low priced wine, but a good taste. Many Aussie New Zealand wines I like.

Last time I wasn't sure I went to a local wine shop, not just a liquor store and asked. The guy was very nice. I gave him my price list and he gave me 5 selections. I bought 2 for my friend and 2 for me. All around 15-20 tops.

All were excellent wines and ones I had never tried. If there is a descent store nearby, that is definitely the way to go and ask. But a wine store, NOT just ABC liquors, etc. There are 2 shops in town I trust and go to them for parties and they always give me good choices. And none were overpriced, all within 10-25 tops.

I also like Yellow Tail.
I haven't had those particular varieties, but I've had others, and Yellow Tail tends to be a good value for the price.

I'm a chardonnay and cabernet drinker, so I can't help on those. But I agree with Felix, there are some great wines out there for $12-$20 bottle these days. I drink a lot of cabernet and chardonnay and I can't remember the last time I bought a wine that wasn't good and I rarely spend over $15 for a bottle. $16 is a special occasion 'round here

I don't know if they produce it or not, but Kendall Jackson is always a good, solid wine. We also have good luck with Clos du Bois and I've never really had a bad wine from Mondavi.
