Found 2 cookbooks today

Post by Dissie » Sun Jun 16, 2013 12:03 am

I stopped into a local thrift store. Their book section is all mixed up. Nothing really made sense, but I am so glad I took the time to look. I found Betty Crockers Step by Step Picture Cookbook. Such wonderful sounding recipes in this book. Happy Camper! The books were on mark down today, so got it for 1 buck. Have been reading all day on this one.

I also found a member submitted cookbook, it is Rosemalers Recipes from Decorah, Iowa. But the recipes are from all states near IA. MN, and WS. They are mostly Norwegian recipes. Really great sounding recipes. I am in MN, so it makes sense I found this gem. My mom is so excited to see it. Lots of the recipes were brought from Europe and are over 100 years old, well at least that's what they say! One I want to try is Blueberry soup! There is also a recipe for Rhubarb Ade. I found one for Goulash called Szegediner. (Gypsy Goulash) Says a common german dish. It includes sauerkraut, so I was excited! I got this one for 75 cents! :D

Found this to add, as I wanted to explain what rosemaling is:
Rosemåling, or rosemaling, Norwegian for "decorative painting", (applied decoration or embellishment, decorative, decorated (rosut, rosute, rosete, rosa) and "å måle, å male" to paint) is the name of a form of decorative folk art that originated in the rural valleys of Norway. Some[who?] art historians interpret "rose" as a reference to the rose flower, although the floral elements are often so stylized that no specific flower is identifiable and not used at all in some designs. Rosemåling is a style of decorative painting on wood that uses stylized flower ornamentation, scrollwork, lining and geometric elements, often in flowing patterns. Landscape and architectural elements are also common. Many other decorative painting techniques were used such as glazing, spattering, marbelizing, manipulating the paint with the fingers or other objects, etc.

Nice! I love finding old cookbooks, especially unusual ones or community type cookbooks. Sounds like you got some interesting books!

Community ones, church cookbooks, even school cookbooks (parents favorites); or a particular town. These are my favorite too.

They have a lot of local fare, unique recipes to the area; and a lot of time, local restaurant favorites. Those are great finds when you can get books like that.

When I go on vacation; I always try to find one. NOT a big one, but usually the smaller ones, usually just paperback. I have some great ones from Brian Head Utah, Lake Tahoe, Dillon, CO, Vail, Gattlinburg, Charleston, New Orleans, Traverscity MI, Kohler WI. Those are some of my favorites.

I love rosemaling! I have a couple of pieces done by an artist in Florida of all places that I bought about 25 years ago. I don't see that kind of thing anymore, but the resurgence of rosemaling as part of decorative painting was big back then.
You got a good deal on the Rosemaler's cookbook. Don't forget to post some of those recipes! :-)

Well, I will try the recipes before posting any here. But they sound delicious. My mom came for lunch today and she loved the rosemalers and took that one home to find some recipes. There are some really "different" sounding recipes. But they sound good too.
