Bacon shortage

Post by Shadows1 » Thu Sep 27, 2012 11:15 am

It has been on the news here for the last 2 days that we are about to experience a world wide bacon shortage! They say that the price of bacon could top $10 per pound by this time next year. I plan on stocking up now just incase it is true.

Maybe if the price goes that high, chefs will stop doing goofy things like putting it in brownies. I can hope, anyway.

I just read that the availability will only drop 1.3% per capita in the USA and 2-3% worldwide. That doesn't sound much like a catastrophic shortage to me.

You know what might cause a shortage? People buying it up to stock up for an anticipated shortage. Self-fulfilling prophecy. ;)

Actually the market is what drives the prices. Shortage of feed results in a shortage of grain fed animals. Ranchers compete with ethanol producers and exports to other countries drive the markets as well.
Not a bit self-fulfilling prophecy at all. Mother Nature is at it again! :(

When rumors of a shortage drive demand up, supply can't keep up. Shortages occur and prices rise.

That's the way the market works. It happened with pumpkin a couple of years ago. Remember the insane prices people were charging on EBay for a can of pumpkin?

It is absolutely a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Choco it is not just a rumor!
The drought is being blamed for the lack of livestock feed which will in turn run up the cost to the farmers and so it is passed on to us the consumer. THAT is what the report stated.
Yes rumor can effect price but that is not the case here.
