Felix, you crack me up. I think it's great that you buy good steel toes boots and don't think the cheap ones are fine. You move around too much to wear ouchy boots. I'm guessing your "work outfit" doesn't include a $200 pair of jeans like was in the article.

It sure doesn't! My socks cost more than my pants!

Good socks are a necessity when wearing boots. A friend of mine wears cowboy boots with panty hose as socks.

I don't know how she does it. My legs may show when I'm wearing boots but there are decent socks hiding in the boots.

Those magazines are pretty ridiculous when it comes to most anything. They will show anything and say, not bad at this price! It could be a spatula for $25. I mean come on, is someone really buying those things at that price?

Maybe they don't realize that a goodly number of the population is struggling and getting by on one income or unemployed.
I love it when Michelle O'Bama touts her clothes shopping at J. Crew. Have you seen the prices there? Holey buckets! Yep. You are really toning it down for the average female voters Michelle. How you do economize. Blah blah blah blah.....
If there was quality in the clothing out there in the stores and shops, it might be more palatable for some of the uppper middle class, but it is so poorly made even they don't want what's on the rack these days.
What I have in my closets now are better made. Most of the stuff they are selling is ugly and ill fitting. And costly! Go figure...
And Gap is moving all their stores to China...good...most of us don't wear a size 1 anyway.

Someone has to be, Dissie or the high end stores wouldn't stay open. There are a few things I'll pay outrageous prices for (handbags) but I don't say "not bad at this price".
Awhile ago a friend of mine was cooking with me. She loved my cookware and was raving about how great it was. She practically had heart failure when I put it in the dishwasher. The point? She cooks with about $8,000 worth of All Clad stainless steel cookware. My stainless steel cookware was less than $500 at Macy's. Some things just don't seem to be worth the extra cost.

The stores may be open, but so many are not buying, just looking.
Many stores are closing or having sales on crap that is from two years ago!!! Didn't want it then and sure don't want it now!
What people consider high end is all relative. Higher end or ultra high end. ;)

You're right, Jelly. I guess compared to Nancy Regan (who is STILL a stylish lady) Michelle Obama's wardrobe IS inexpensive. Compared to what the rest of us are looking for, it's not all that reasonable. L.L. Bean is another crazy one. I've seen better clothes at much more reasonable prices at Tractor Supply Company.
I won't miss The Gap. It seems like their sizes just got smaller and smaller and smaller.

That just struck me as hilarious!!!! I wear a lot of classic clothes and I'll just keep what is in my closet rather than wear some of the ugly stuff in the stores.
I also believe the retailers think shoppers are just plain stupid. Last summer I needed a "semi formal" dress for a wedding. I found one I loved at Dress Barn and am not ashamed to say it
was "a steal" at $70. Unfortunately DB didn't have a bra that I could wear under the dress so it was off to Macy's. Evening wear and lingerie are on the second floor of my Macy's. As soon as I got off the escalator, I spotted MY dress. Of course I had to check it out. Exact same cut, color, fabric, trim, length. The only difference was the dress carried Macy's house label and a price tag that was exactly $100 more than I had just paid for the same dress at Dress Barn.

I don't care how much it cost if it can't go in the dishwasher or washing machine it isn't for me! The things that absolutely can't go in one of those never get used
