This is the structure I have on my leg until I see the surgeon again on the 14th. It's half cast, half splint, which apparently it needs to be to allow for swelling. For perspective, the foot you can see is a size 9. This one was taken Tuesday night when I was still in the hospital, but ain't nothin' changed since then, except I'm now wearing pants.

And this is my primary mode of movement for the next several months. Current decorations will give way to others for the holidays.

And then there are the drugs. Two of them I normally take (allergy, baby aspirin). But I've also added a nerve blocker, a muscle relaxer, some acetaminophen with codeine, a blood thinner, and a stool softener. What sucks is that it still hurts, quite often a lot.

Yeah, and if I was concerned about any of that I wouldn't have posted the picture. Or, I wouldn't have blocked out the prescription numbers or my last name. Good luck finding me in a city of 189,815 (not counting the suburbs where I actually live), between 10 Walgreens branches using only my first name.

I'm so glad the surgery went well and you're home. Not at all glad with what you're going thru. Not being truly mobile for the next 4 months is not my idea of fun or anyone else! Heal quickly and my thoughts are with you.

Felix, so glad you've had your surgery and are on the mend!

The only advice I can offer is don't do what one of our doctors at work did. He had foot/ankle surgery with pins and screws, and was told NOT to put full weight on that foot and keep it elevated as much as possible. Right. Try telling a doctor what to do... He decided he knew better (of course he did, being a pediatric ENT doc...) and starting dashing around the hospital and standing for too long. Long story short, and 3 surgeries later, his limp may be dashing but that built-up shoe he has to wear isn't all that fashionable.

Hope your pain lets up VERY soon, but when it starts to don't do what Dr. Doofus did! (((hugs))) (This place SO needs a "hugs" smiley!)

My surgeon explained to me in no uncertain terms what would happen if I so much as rested my foot on the floor, so I am religious about keeping it up. It's made for some interesting little dances here and there, but so far I'm winning. Of course, at this point it still hurts so bad I can't conceive of walking on it. :?

I did, however, have the weirdest dream last night. I dreamed I was sneaking around my house walking, but I got caught, so the surgeon just cut my foot off entirely to teach me a lesson. I think I miss walking already, and it's only been a week.

Had my first post-surgical appointment today. They removed the ridiculously huge and ugly cast/splint and replaced it with a regular cast. In purple. :D Now I'm allowed to leave the house, but still not allowed to walk. It's also easily half the size, if a bit heavier.

The really good news is that I seem to be winning on pain. Two tylenol 3 w/codeine every six hours seems to take care of it. And she said I'll probably be able to go down to one pill in a couple of days, since the real cast has more structure and support. Now to wait until I'm allowed to walk again. The goal is still mid-February.
