I'm Struggling With Serving Size

Post by Deely » Wed Nov 02, 2011 5:04 pm

How do you decide serving size when posting a recipe? We're not big eaters. 1 1/2 pounds of meat will serve the two of us, plus leave us with leftovers for the next day. Should I post it as 2, 3 or 4 servings, which is what we get out of it. I'm thinking...take the middle road with 3 servings.

A good rule of thumb is 4 oz per serving, which would be 6 servings, so you use 4 servings it should work just fine

I didn't know that. It's exactly the info I was looking for. Thank you Foxy! 8-)

Yes, when I took a food service course a few years ago, they taught us that the standard serving is 4 oz. I loved that class, learned a lot of useful stuff!

I am not a shy eater. I hate going some place and they have this skimpy little portion. That is just not me. I agree 3-6, 4 for me is average. And when posting a recipe, I like to go 4-6, to show that on the low side it may feed 6 but on the bigger side, 4. That way it is covered.

To me, 4 large breasts can feed more than 4. I often slice them and serve with pasta or rice and a veggie; if you add a salad ... That 4 pieces of chicken can serve 6.

Yeah, it seems like chicken breasts keep getting bigger & bigger. Wonder just what they're feeding those hens, anyway?? I need some of THAT stuff...

Yep, that's kind of what I go by. It is hard - I posted a taco soup recipe and it does have a pound of beef in it, so 4 servings, right? But it also has 3 cans of veggies, tomatoes and etc...so then I had to bump it up to 6. But my family of four would polish it off, LOL :D
