Dh had planned on a steak for dinner but at what was our dinner time we were not really that hungry so settled for a sandwich (toasted jaffle sandwiches, used some left over chicken curry for the DM, DS and myself and the DH fried himself up some skinless chilli sausages and had with sauce and toast), in case anyone is wondering a jaffle sandwich is made in modern day terms an electric sandwich toaster which totally encases the sandwich and will also cuts it (well almost does) diagonally for you. In the old fashion ones which you used on the stove top or on the camp fire, they originally came as a round so the corners of the bread would burn and fall off into the fire but you ended up with a hot sandwich and whatever you put in it which could be savoury or sweet, later the camp fire ones became square and even later you could get ones which you could make two sandwiches at once (best done in the camp fire), personally don't think the modern manufactured ones are anywhere nearly as good as the old cast iron ones for the camp fire. But with the campfire/stove top ones you ended up with a whole sandwich they did not halve the sandwich.

This is picky from an electric sandwich toaster

These sandwiches were my saviour in trying to get our DS (autism with intellectual impairment and now 30 year of age) try different foods and he loved toasted sandwiches but it enabled us to put different fillings in so he could experience different tastes, when introducing something new to him I would put it in a jaffle for lunch and then at night the filling would be on his plate and at first he would put on the I am going to be sick but in a stern tone we would say EAT and because we know he had enjoyed it for lunch it was a case of I know this and yes I like and he ate. As said earlier you can treat the bread like you would a pastry and put sweet fillings in them or even use pastry instead of bread, there is a restaurant in Melbourne that features jaffle desserts on their menu, so they are very versatile.

Morning KC. I don't post often, but I do read the posts in "What's up?" and "What's for dinner" daily. I just wanted you to know that your story today about the grocery check out was phenomenal, and it made my day. You do so much to improve the world you live in for the people you share it with. Thanks for that and for sharing things like this with us.

Thx Mary, much appreciated. I don't do stuff like that often; but, it was so touching. I cried the whole day. But, thank you. I took me a while to write it.
We are having dinner next week together. I invited them over so they could enjoy the pool and jacuzzi. I thought they may like it. They are a good family.

ImPat, I have one of those contraptions; they work great. I also have a NEW, well 20 yrs old; but, new electric version. Both work great.

They do make good sandwiches. I love to make apple turnovers in them. Cinnamon raisin bread, apple pie filling; I usually add some nuts. cook; and top with ice cream and caramel sauce. SO delicious. It was my sons favorite.
For the adults, I usually add a little brandy to the filling, lol. Kids too, if I want them to sleep :)

I can first remember my dad using them when I was about 5 (old cast iron one) on the gas stove so that puts it at over 50 years ago.

Welcome ssej! Nice to see you.

Pretty nice here today; but, rain moving in tomorrow. Had friends stopping by today; but, they cancelled. Coming tomorrow instead - fine with me; just snacks mid day.

Otherwise, football today; and, catching up. Boring. Hopefully someone else is doing something more fun than me, lol.
