Will my chrysanthemums re-bloom?

Post by Marion_in_Savannah » Fri Nov 18, 2011 6:32 pm

I got two gorgeous large yellow chrysanthemum plants for the front porch before Halloween, and they've been gorgeous. I could see new little buds forming below the first flush of blooms, but then we had a COMPLETELY unexpected and very early freeze, so of course all those little buds are now toast. If I trim these plants back, getting rid of the past blooms and the poor, dead little buds will they bloom again for me? The plants seem happy and healthy otherwise.

Good Question, I have had that happen to me too. But my plants never rebloomed. Not sure where you are from, but here, after the first freeze snow soon follows.

I'm in Savannah, Georgia, so we don't get HARD freezes. We'll get cold snaps that are enough to freeze the water in the birdbath or the hose if it's left out on the lawn, but nothing like folks farther north. It's almost unheard of for the temps to remain below freezing for days at a time. The last time we had a real, measurable snowfall here was Christmas of 1989.

Yes, they will rebloom if you deadhead them now and keep them watered and relatively warm (not freezing - almost as if a houseplant). I also have potted mums that I deadhead and they bloom pretty much year round. I love having my mum pots blooming in MAY! But you do have to be diligent about water and clipping to get them to come back.

I haven't had time to deadhead yet, but I'm keeping them watered. With the long 4-day (for me) weekend coming up those babies will be refurbished to bloom again! And I'll probably try putting them in the ground if I can keep them happily alive through the winter...
