Recipe Help

Post by Dissie » Thu Jan 31, 2013 11:56 pm

My mother gave me a cookbook for Christmas that has an enticing sounding recipe.

Hamburger-Sauerkraut Hotdish (OK, its a MN cookbook)
1 pound ground beef
1 tsp salt
1 cup sauerkraut, drained
2 cups uncooked noodles of choice
1 cream of mushroom soup
1 cream of celery soup
1/2 cup shredded cheese
1 small onion, chopped
1/4 tsp pepper

Brown ground with onions, drain grease. Mix all other ingredients with beef and onions. Place in casserole dish and bake at 350 degrees for 30-40 minutes.

OK, now my question. How is there enough liquid in this recipe to cook the 2 cups of noodles? I just don't get it. :?:

I'm guessing the soup. But, I wish I could help you more. I don't use soup too often. But I would think a little water is needed.

Do you think they meant the soup, but then the water also which is normally added to the soup. I know what you mean. Your guess is as good as mine.

Two cans of soup is more than plenty enough liquid for that. The idea is not to make a soupy casserole (which it would be if you added the water), but to soften the noodles and make something you can eat with a fork. :)

It will work! We have a recipe similar that does not add any liquid. The soups , kraut and onion release enough liquid as well as the meat to cook the noodles.

Sorry Felix we were posting over each other.

I was thinking the exact same thing Shadows. :)

I wouldn't of thought that, but good to know. I have used soup in some casserole; but I don't think with noodles. Even my chicken and rice adds water.

Good to know!

I think I would cook the noodles first then add the condensed soup without any liquid

hope this helps ;)

Friend shared a casserole recipe with hamburger, sourkraut and tomatoe soup using rice instead of the pasta - it calls for adding enough water to cover. Never think to measure the amount of water so haven't shared the recipe. Recipes are so much easier to enter here I may have to give posting it a try. With your recipe I too think the soups, sourkraut and onions would release enough moisture. Sounds like a great reipe for a cold winter day but can't give it a try until I get some sourkraut! :D

I am going to try the recipe this weekend, will let everyone know. Asked my mom, since she is a part of the organization who published the recipe book, she said I would be worried too, but just try it. These ladies have never steered her wrong. Apparently.

But I was thinking...I make a cabbage hotdish my mom taught me which includes soup and it works. Cooks the cabbage and its delicious. No liquids added. Thing that worries me is the noodles of course. Just going to try it this weekend, and stop worrying about it. It sounds delicious to me. Sauerkraut is one of my favorites.
