I puzzled why people post recipes with # and not size so far I've not seen any here and that's good! also do you know if I can freeze white mushrooms from the produce dept?

You can freeze the mushrooms one you have sauted or roasted them.
By the way a 14oz is a number 300 can. I think the reason for using can #'s might be that some measurements are Imperial or metric???

Used to be, all cans were called a #whatever rather than giving a size in ounces or whatever. It's very old school (most of my great-grandma's recipes that use cans call for a #whatever can, for instance). Everybody just knew what size they were.
I've found this chart invaluable on many occasions.

thanks! okay I'll fry them first in a skillet, so what happens if I don't fry them first?

Adam they will be disgusting. Dried out & tasteless. I freeze them all the time but only after they are cooked.
For example if you wanted to freeze broccolli. You would blanch it first.
