Cheese and Onion Sandwich
Post
by Dissie » Wed Jan 11, 2012 3:46 pm
OK, I have heard of this sandwich, and it sounds like I might really like it. But never having it, I am not quite sure whats all involved. Slice of onion and cheese?

That can't be it! ;) Anyone got a recipe or a method? I hear this is a very British sandwich/staple!

Mmmm I love cheese and onion sandwiches Dissie, it's one of my favorites. There is no recipe per se, it really is just sliced bread, Cheddar cheese and yellow onion sliced into thin rings. My mum would butter each slice of her bread but I don't as I prefer it just plain.
Some people may put Branston pickle, HP sauce or even Piccalilli on their sandwiches but it's down to personal preference. If you make it try to get the sharpest Cheddar cheese that you can, as cheese and onion sandwiches are traditionally made with Cheddar cheese, the onion I used (when I lived in the England) was yellow Spanish which is not sweet at all and compliments the sharp cheese.

Grilled cheese and onion sammies are YUM! I slice the onion paper thin so it cook all the way through. Good stuff with a bowl of mater soup.

Hmmmm, ok. Well I saw a picture of one, and it looked almost like pimento cheese spread. It had cheese, onions, maybe mayo? Something green, maybe green onions? It wasn't like what you described. Thanks though! ;)

That is how my mum made them and so as an adult I made them that way too, now that's not to say the U.K. hasn't updated the sandwich to include what you mentioned, mayo, green onion etc, perhaps Ninya can shed some light on it.
I suspect what your looking at is grated cheese rather than a spread because that's how the supermarkets and convenience store's in the U.K. make them, and not big door steps chunks of cheese like me.

Oh, I wasn't meaning your sandwich or way you made them is wrong, it was just dif than the pic I saw. Of course, it didn't have a recipe, just called it a british favorite and said cheese and onion sandwich. It wasn't toasted either. I am just curious is all!

When I make a cheese and onion sandwich I grate the cheese preferably sharp and chop the onion and mix it with a little mayo. I like it best on toast.

You should try it Dissie. They're really tasty. Now I am in the mood for cheese and onion on toast. It's been ages since I have had it. Plus I always have cheese and onions on hand.
