Watching television in those days was not the same experience as it is today. After years of listening to radio, we found the black-and-white images mesmerizing.

Watching TV is companionable: you share an experience, you can comment on the action here and there for a bit of conversation... it's a way of showing someone that you want his or her company and engaging in a low-key, pleasant, undemanding way.

We got our first TV around 1954. We were just kids then and we sat right in front of the TV. And our parents really didn't mind, because then we could change the channel for them (no remote controls!). I don't know how many of you are old enough to remember some of the shows from back then. My personal favorite was The Big Top starring Mary Hartline. It was a show about the circus, and she was dressed up like a majorette with a white blouse, red felt skirt and white cowboy-type majorette boots. My brother's favorite was The Roy Rogers Show.

TV was a big deal back in the days. Definitely not the same as it is today.

Oh gosh how the television has changed, now they are so advanced I needed to get someone just to get my new TV up and running. I remember the day when TV's had rabbit ears

I can only imagine what they will be like 50-100 years from now

I remember back in the 1950's...our first tv was an upright Admiral (with tubes). I was just about 6 years old then and my favourite shows were The Mickey Mouse Club with Annette Funicello, Roy Rogers...followed by Lassie. My how times and things have changed!

My dad finally bought a TV when I was in the first grade (1954). It was easy to decide what to watch--we only got three channels.
