I would taste first. Molasses is going to give you a richer flavor even though they are both sweet. Brown sugar will just be sweet. I would taste, then add a little molasses first, then a little brown and see how it tastes to you.

Honey also adds a little flavor too which is a different sweet taste. There is no right or wrong

Yes cilla, you can try making your own ketchup if that would be better for you to start with.

1 (28-oz) can whole tomatoes in puree
1 medium onion, chopped
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 tablespoon tomato paste
2/3 cup packed dark brown sugar
1/2 cup cider vinegar
1/2 teaspoon salt

Puree tomatoes in a blender until smooth. Cook onion in oil in a heavy saucepan over moderate heat, stirring until translucent. Add pureed tomatoes, tomato paste, brown sugar, vinegar, and salt. Simmer uncovered, stirring often until very thick, about 1 hour.
Puree ketchup in 2 batches in blender until smooth. Chill, covered, at least 2 hours before serving.

If you are making barbecue sauce, you won't need to chill just make the sauce, adding mustard and more brown sugar, etc....

Well, Thank you everyone! Dissie what a great idea using canned whole tomatoes. I guess somebody should come up with a total from scratch recipe for homemade BBQ sauce. Hint, Hint. :)

Not sure where this came from originally, but it is in MY BBQ file. I remember I got it from a friend, but otherwise where she got it ... no clue, but it is pretty good and never had any complaints. It is the only BBQ sauce my gf makes and I have made it as well

Add everything to a small pot, bring to a light boil - reduce to a simmer for 20 minutes and enjoy

1 cup cola carbonated beverage
1 cup tomato sauce
6 oz tomato paste
1/4 cup butter
1/2 cup worcestershire
1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
1/2 cup molasses
1/2 cup cider vinegar
2 1/2 teaspoons balsamic vinegar
1 12 tablespoons steak sauce
1 tablespoon yellow mustard
1 tablespoon chili powder
1 tsp savory (dried)
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon garlic salt
1 teaspoon hot sauce
That looks really good Kim - could you clarify how much steak sauce, I'm guessing 1 1/2 T. but just want to be sure.
