BBQ sauce without ketchup

Post by Cilla » Sat Jan 14, 2012 5:37 pm

I over cooked a pork sirloin roast and was thinking I would make BBQ pork sandwiches out of it so am looking for BBQ sauce recipes that don't use ketchup but tomato sauce, diced, whole, etc. It's snowing here and I don't want to use up my only big bottle of ketchup but have tons of canned tomato products. I would appreciate any help you guys can come up with. Thank You! :)

Have you tried Googling this or Googling ketchup substitute?

I maybe late, but ...

Not sure where this came from originally, but it is in MY BBQ file. I remember I got it from a friend, but otherwise where she got it ... no clue, but it is pretty good and never had any complaints. It is the only BBQ sauce my gf makes and I have made it as well

Add everything to a small pot, bring to a light boil - reduce to a simmer for 20 minutes and enjoy

1 cup cola carbonated beverage
1 cup tomato sauce
6 oz tomato paste
1/4 cup butter
1/2 cup worcestershire
1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
1/2 cup molasses
1/2 cup cider vinegar
2 1/2 teaspoons balsamic vinegar
1 12 tablespoons steak sauce
1 tablespoon yellow mustard
1 tablespoon chili powder
1 tsp savory (dried)
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon garlic salt
1 teaspoon hot sauce

Thanks Kim, I have everything except for cola... btw, it isn't too late since I havn't done anything yet with the pork. Do you think the recipe would work without the cola?

Not sure, it needs that flavor, root beer would work. But I think it does need that sweet flavor. I honestly can't say, I have always used it.

But all the other stuff is pretty basic, so it might. It's a pretty good sauce and I know I usually have most of the ingredients too. I certainly think it would be worth a try.

make it without only you may have to adjust the sugar and possibly add some sort of juice. do you have any beer that might work if you add extra sugar.

I was just going to add that, beer or even OJ or apple juice.
Great idea Shirl

I don't use ketchup in BBQ sauce, I use tomato sauce. You might have to adjust your sugars, but I don't like really sweet, so it works for us.

I do have beer! LOL! So maybe add a little more molasses or brown sugar? I don't buy Pop except for once or twice a year and usually just for floats in the summer. But I always have beer and wine.

Denise what is your recipe? I think I'm getting really close to using my overcooked pork roast. I just hate to throw food out since it costs so much nowadays. Thanks everyone.
