What is in your freezer right now?

Post by HeatherFeather » Fri Aug 03, 2012 10:50 am

I am going through my freezer today so I can reorganize what I have and also to get rid of anything that is no longer edible. I tossed some old ice cream that had gotten too icy, today everything else is coming out to get sorted.

So far I know I have:
2 steaks
2 packages of marinated beef tenderloin tips (in buffalo sauce)
1-2 packages of beef tenderloin tips (plain)
some pre-breaded/pre-seasoned fish fillets
2 pieces breaded chicken breasts
1 bag frozen boneless skinless chicken breasts (maybe 7 of them in there)
a bag of shrimp that I think I'll need to toss once I find it (been in there a while now)
a few plain chicken tenderloin pieces (unseasoned)
a few boneless pork loin slices
1 ham steak slice
1 bag crinkle cut fries, mostly full
1/2 box sweet potato fries

1 bag frozen peas
1 bag frozen corn
1 bag California blend veggies
1 bag cauliflower

several bags of Asian dumplings & buns, various flavors

1 tube frozen minced lemongrass
1 tube frozen minced ginger

1 tub Cool Whip (might not be full)
1 tub Rocky Road ice cream, half full

Ok - that was all based on memory. Now to check what else is in there...

Here are the things I found that I didn't remember I had:
a few stray candy bars
1 package crispy tempura chips (for topping sushi)
I had WAY more plain beef tenderloin tips than I thought! 5 packages!
I also have 3 steaks, not 2 as I had thought
a few frozen waffles - these might get tossed
1 box pet ice cream
(still sorting it all, I'll be back)

In small fridge freezer; ground beef and pork, frozen vegetables, leftover tomato paste from a can, frozen yogurt, popsicles, sliced bread, buns, butter, 4 Italian sausage links, Cool Whip, chicken breast and thighs, left over grilled steak and lastly ice cubes

Wow - I can't believe how much stuff I had stuffed in that small space.

I threw out a bunch of old bread/rolls, the waffles, and the bag of shrimp - all had bad frostbite. I found out that I have 6 different bags of Asian dumplings at the moment, plus I had 3 partially empty bags of Asian steamed buns (these have sweet bean fillings in them). I condensed the buns into one bag, since they are all similar and cook the same way.

I also found some frozen leftovers that I forgot to label or the label fell off. I couldn't remember what they were or how long they had been frozen, so I tossed them. I knew that no one was going to end up eating them. (Not too much wasted at least, most of my leftovers get eaten quickly).

There was a container of leftover pasta sauce (or possibly pizza sauce) as well - I will thaw that out and use it soon to get that used up.

I found a few extra bags of frozen veggies in fruit that had gotten stuffed under the dumplings - more cauliflower and a cauli-broc blend. I also have some shredded zucchini and a big bag of frozen whole bananas for making breads, plus 1/2 bag frozen blueberries, and 1 bag mango puree (good for smoothies). Oh and 2 pkgs of English muffins.

I also found a few pieces of mystery meat - carefully wrapped and not too old, I just forgot to label them. I know they are either boneless chicken or pork loin, just not sure which or if they are cut up or not. Guess I will have to thaw them out and see what they are this week, then figure out what to do with them.

Well I think keeping a list is a great idea.
I have tried off and on to do that but my dear hubby... won't update the list whenever he gets in there.
Sometimes I think I have something and find I don't.
He will take stuff out of there and take it to work.
Like steak for example, he works for the railroad and is out of town a lot.
He will take meats with him to put on the grill when he gets there.
It's thawed by the time he arrives.
If he is too tired he puts it in the fridge in the room.
I have no problem with that except that he won't keep the list up and he don't tell me what he too so I can update!
Men! What do ya do with 'em?
I have better luck teaching an old dog new tricks! ;)

I try to just check through the freezer at least once a month to see what i have in there. Lately I have been checking it more often, because I had let a lot of stuff slide and kept forgetting to check it. Now I have a lot of excess that needs to get eaten up.

I have been doing really well so far. Half of the dumplings are gone, and we ate through quite a bit of the meat and fish. I am trying very, very hard to buy as little as possible so I have plenty of room in there for a massive OAMC freezer cooking day. I am hoping I can designate half of the freezer to prepped meals, and the remaining space to raw meats, veg, and prepped frozen ingredients like stock, chopped onions, etc.

I guess I can feel lucky. I have 2 freezers not including the fridge freezer.
There was a big chest freezer when we moved here and I already had an upright.
I use both freezers.
Every other year we butcher a beef and keep have.
1 side of beef fills my upright with little space left over.
We buy chicken and will buy pork until we get one butchered.
As for fish we buy that fresh and usually don't freeze it.
I would like to because we love fish especially salmon and tilapia.

I just made myself a list with 2 colums. 1 for the item, 1 for the amount. and it is lined so easy to write in.

I laminated mine and I have a dry erase pen I have stuck on the door with the list with velcro. I can just use my finger to change the amount, or change anything.

But, yes, it is great to keep up. But my ex did the same. But once a week I would go out and do a quick check. My tupperware containers help because I can see what is low or not.

But I forget too, lol. I went to make a soup which had a fair amount of peas as a main ingredient ... and guess what? NO peas, I had spinach instead. Oops.
So, it does work for me, but - not always.

When I was married I had a small decorative chalkboard on the fridge; and when my no ex or my son, or myself went to get something and it wasn't there, we would write it on the board. It worked well.

I have been looking for a chalkboard that will work on my fridge for a while now. I got sick of my dry erase board - the marker stops erasing well after a while. Annoying to have to clean the thing so often. Chalk is a lot easier to clean up!

Getting to see more space in the freezer - when I have at least one clear shelf I should be able to make some prepped meals. I am so sick of eating up what is in there already!
