Hi Axe! I would like to make some jelly for Christmas gifts but have no clue what to buy. There are so many canning kits and utensils to chose from I am not sure what I really need to begin.

Found this at WalMart.....
Ball Canning Kit $49.97

Hi, I'm not Axe but I'll try to help you here.

You need the canner with rack; there are smaller ones but the large ones are good because you can do almost any size of jar in them. The funnel and jar lifter are essential. If you can buy those things separately for a better price you can just use a knife to remove bubbles and a fork to dig out your jar lids. (The lid lifter would likely work better).

Also, to make jelly you need a good non-corrosive pot - I use a stainless steel 4 qt Dutch oven - it should have a heavy bottom. And you will need a spoon - I like to use a long handled stainless steel one - to stir the jelly.

And, of course, jars and lids. I like the 8 oz. ones to give as gifts, and the pints for our own use. You may have your own preferences with these.

To make jellies you will also need something to strain your fruit - a piece of muslin, or old, clean dish towel (woven cotton kind) in a colander set over a pail will do.

Then get some fruit and pectin and you should be good to go.

Crocus you were a big help, thank you so much!

I will go with the larger size like you suggested and get the extras to make things a little easier for me. I can be a bit of a clumsy one sometimes!

This seems a lot more doable now. :)
