Special Diets

Post by QueenBea » Sat Apr 29, 2023 3:10 pm

Hello all,

These days there are so many types of special diets it's hard to keep up with them all. Some people follow specific diets for medical reasons and some by choice. Whatever the reason, I thought I would be a great idea to start this thread so we could help each other find specific types of recipes.

Are you looking for specific types of recipes to accommodate your dietary needs?? Then post your requests here in this thread and we will try our best to help you along...

I will start be adding a few low FODMAP recipes here. It was recently recommended by my Gastroenterologist to follow the low FODMAP diet to try to eliminate what I call gut flare ups. The goal of following a low FODMAP diet is to eliminate foods that cause IBS symptoms and then you slowly introduce high FODMAP foods, one at a time. This helps you determine what foods cause you to have flare ups. I was lucky enough to have coverage to pay for a dietitian, but I find most recipes in the meal plan offered to me so bland, it made it difficult for me to stay on track. So, I researched what was allowed and not, how much of this and that was acceptable and tried my best to develop recipes that worked for me.

Bea, this is a great idea. My hubby is a heart patient so he has to have a low sodium diet. And also a low potassium diet. My sister is a kidney patient and has many food restrictions, one being low calcium and potassium.
Here are a few of my recipes that qualify for these needs.

Very low sodium soy sauce substitute #recipe5145
Homemade rice milk #recipe12363 (for lactose intolerant or calcium restricted)
Faux Potato Salad #recipe39673 (for low potassium)
Rich Roasted Red Pepper Pasta Sauce #recipe31463 (for low potassium)

My husband is allergic to shellfish, crustaceans and mollusks. So many recipes call for Fish Sauce, which I'm not comfortable bringing into the house. Does anyone know a good substitute? Or maybe there just isn't one?

Soy sauce works well as a sub for fish sauce. Hubby hates fish sauce so I always just use it instead, measure for measure ;) I actually did just that last week when making wings that called for fish sauce.

That’s good to know! I always just avoid recipes with fish sauce. I’m glad I asked!

You can also use Worcestershire sauce.

We are in the process of adding a "Diets" forum so we can post this kind of stuff there... I think it will be a great idea to help others out. We are just sorting out categories right now then I will see if I can move the posts there ;)
