Grocery Store Challenge Dec 17-24

Post by HeatherFeather » Sat Dec 17, 2011 10:09 pm

My challenge this week will be a continuation of last week's challenge: using up anything that will spoil or go stale before I get back from my mom's for the holidays.

Unless I need something really important, I don't plan to buy any groceries at all this week. I might run out of milk, eggs, or bread but otherwise I can eat whatever is already in the house.

What are your challenges this week?

We aren't spending anything on groceries either. I have stuff to finish baking and the freezer is full, so I will happily stay out of the store this week! :D

I did the last of my grocery shopping today - needed to pick up an extra bag of flour and evaporated milk for a macaroni pie.

Like you Heather, my challenge will ride into this week again and I will be looking at the list I made of everything that I have in stock and make meals and goodies using those items.

For sure I will use up the last 4 waffles cones and make some more homemade drumsticks. The first 2 I made as an experiment came out pretty good, the waffle cone didn't stay 100% crisp even though I coated inside with chocolate shell sauce and froze it before putting in the ice cream to prevent any kind of sogginess but I enjoyed it anyway.

Again, the remainder of my crescent roll dough appears. Hope I get it used up this week cause the best by date was the 16th. So when I opened it I froze the remainder in rectangles between wax paper. I only eat 2 triangles at a time usually and hardly seem to make recipes using it. So I doubt I'll buy any more in a hurry.

I intend to make a baked ziti casserole this week and I'll freeze leftovers for future meals. This dish will dip into my penne pasta, ground beef, sour cream and spaghetti sauce. Only the spaghetti sauce will completely get used up in this dish which is mainly what I want.

The pound cakes, hope to eat it up this week.

Maybe I'll have another good week and eat up or use up some other things that I didn't expect to just like last week.

Ran out of coffee creamer last night, and down to the last drops of milk, so I did have to buy milk, eggs, and creamer last night. Also grabbed a can of peaches I had forgotten to buy for a recipe since they were on sale. That was it for my grocery run, so doing well.

Well I thought I wouldn't be buying anything, but I need some veggies. So going to the store to get some brussel sprouts, cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower. Shouldn't be to expensive. I have been craving cabbage casserole and am going to work that into some nights meal in the near future.

Heather, thanks for the reminder. DH ran out of his french vanilla creamer yesterday too...

Crap sounds like I need to make a list! Image

Hopefully I will only be buying veggies for Christmas dinner, and a few frozen things my hubby can pop in the oven for the following week when I will be gone. I hope to not have to spend more than $40. I'll let you know what ends up happening, I probably won't go shopping until Thursday or Friday.

Happy Holidays everyone! :D Just relaxing before tomorrow morning. I already made macaroni pie for tomorrow's Christmas lunch and used up the last bit of elbow macaroni in the process 8-).

This week I stuck to some of my plans - I made the ice cream drumsticks (yummo!) and the baked ziti which helped me to get rid of all my penne pasta and spaghetti sauce plus I froze leftovers from it so I am getting a few meals out of that. Crescent rolls haven't moved yet. The sour cream was used in both the baked ziti and a panetonne recipe and my fridge, freezer and pantry list is starting to get smaller - yay :!:

I need to stop stocking up so much in the future and making impulse buys or buying on a craving or wanting to try a recipe so badly. Unless I get a really good sale on certain items (preferably ones that can be stored in the freezer for longevity)
