Re: What's For Dinner!-January 2012
6am, at least 5 hours of sleep, a vast improvement!
Another warm and sunny day today, no complaints, but we could certainly use some rain!
Soup Day: Ham and Bean Soup. Basic bean soup, but my own recipe (carrots, potatoes, celery, onion, leeks, garlic, ham, chicken stock, cumin, bay leaf, parsley, soup base seasoning, dried thyme, and of course navy beans). I consider that a basic ham and bean soup.
Bread: Part of the use it or loose it challenge, freezer stash, loafs of frozen white bread, with a herb parmesan butter crust.
Dinner: New rib recipe: http://www.recipezazz.com/recipe/beer-b ... back-ribs; http://www.food.com/recipe/swiss-mushroom-loaf-261407 (which is excellent); broccoli slaw (and more pantry cleaning ... slaw dressing).
I'm also grilling chicken thighs and drumsticks in pantry marinade; for sandwiches or for another dinner, part of the use it or loose it. Four chicken thighs will be for dinner; 2 for sandwiches; 4 drum sticks for my ravioli later this week. And the rest of the thighs and drumsticks in the freezer for later. They are great for chicken salad or a wrap sandwich. Cheaper than buying lunch meat

First I would like to say that while waiting yesterday for Dh to finish car business. We sat out on the back patio. At 12.20pm it was 64F in the sun. Today we are below freezing at 27.9 with a major storm expected Thursday.
As we traveled North the clouds had become very dark. Dh drove very carefully with his new toy, keeping to the speed limit as many cars passed us. Came up to a red light in the right hand lane & when it went green he gunned it. Now I have been in many fast cars over the years but this was different. The power in this thing put me way back into the seat. I said to Dh "What was that?". Dh said "That is what you call twin turbos".I just thought it was so funny & never would have thought the car had it in it to that degree. It was like liftoff.
The restaurant was very nice. We arrived a little after 4pm. It was originally an 19th Century historic school house. The table are all black walnut. The walls are done in lime. Again all local items were used. This the 1st restaurant of now two was opened with a song. It started with an idea based on the group & song "The Moody Blues, To Our Children's Children's Children's".
Now the food. Dh has a bloody caesar. On the rim of the glass was different & in addition to the salt was a brown item mixed in. It was very nice made in house. At a cost of $3.80. Now I had a local dry ice wine that they insisted that I try first to see if it was to my liking, no problem there. Appetizers, I worked the potato/leek soup which is one of my favorites. I do not know what they did to that but it was one of the best I have ever had & I have had a lot of them. It was dark brown in colour. Dh thought the colour was due to using Yukon Gold potatoes & maybe so but there was something more? Dh had the S&P chicken wings which were very crisp & light even though deep fried. Mains, mine was the pickerel tacos which funny enough is local & the first time I have had pickerel as I always choose perch. Dh ordered the bison cheese burger. Very thing was very good & well presented.
So off to the washroom & to nose around. In the back were two rooms. One which could be used as a private room with a massive screen & sound system. These rooms could be divided by closing glass screens. All table set in white linen & lovely settings (flowers, glasses & silverware). Coming around the other way I pass the kitchen which has a very large window so you can watch what is happening. Very nice & the first time I have seen such an items as this & being a foody this was exciting. Returning back to the bar area I asked to see the dinner menu. Very nice & several items I would not mind trying. Maybe dinner in the summer when it stays lighter later in the day. So all in all we gave the place a big thumbs up.
Well today is Dd's return flight home. So I am having a brunch which will a seat down affair as this will be our last meal together for sometime. She has invited a number of her friends & The Boy of course. I am serving the usual breakfast items. Eggs scrambled, french toast, home fries, massive amounts of bacon & per Dd's request cheese bread (3) which are now baking.
Well that is all my news. I will say it is going to quiet around here tomorrow. Yes I will put it in print Denise, I will miss her. I know this is a long post even for me, lol. Have a wonderful Sunday everyone.

What's going to be nice is making the trip to his house without the roads being crappy and living each moment in fear of going in a ditch! He lives about 85 miles north and a bit east of me, in prime "holy crap how much snow DO you people get?!?" territory. It's unheard-of this time of year, but we're taking the gift!
Re: What's For Dinner!-January 2012
Felix the roads are good here too. The temp is now 45.1F which is good for this time of year.
Denise, nice gift!
