Step 1: Dissolve sugar in the smallest amount possible of cold water.
Step 2: Pour in lemon juice.
Step 3: Stir in rum, cognac and brandy, in that order.
Step 4: Chill.
Step 5: Allow mixture to mellow for several hours, giving an occasional stir.
Step 6: Serve in punch bowl with an ice ring.
