Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 1 1/2 pounds lean ground beef
  • 1 large yellow onion, diced
  • 1 can (19 ounce) diced tomatoes (Italian flavored)
  • 3 cans (10 ounce) beef consomme
  • 2 cups water
  • 1/2 to 3/4 pound carrots, diced (3 large)
  • 2 celery stalks, diced
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1 cup barley (dry)
  • 4 cups chopped cabbage (coarsely chopped, about 1/2 head)
  • 1 teaspoon salt (to taste)
  • Ground pepper
