  • 2/3 cup shortening (room temperature)
  • 1 1/2 cups packed brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts (or pecans)

How to Make

  • Step 1: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

  • Step 2: In a large bowl cream the shortening with brown sugar, water and vanilla until blended.

  • Step 3: Add in eggs and continue beating until fluffy and combined

  • Step 4: In a small bowl combine the flour with cocoa, salt and baking soda; add to the creamed mixture and beat until combined.

  • Step 5: Mix in the chocolate chips and nuts.

  • Step 6: Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls onto a greased cooking/baking sheet.

  • Step 7: Bake for 7-9 minutes (do not over bake).
