Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 6 cups sifted cake flour
  • 2 tablespoons baking powder (2 tablespoons is the right amount!)
  • 1 1/2 cups butter or margarine, room temperature (white margarine makes the cake extra white)
  • 3 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 12 egg whites, room temperature

How to Make

  • Step 1: Preheat oven to 325°F. Oven rack must be positioned to second lowest rack. Grease bottom of 8 or 9-inch pans and line with waxed paper or parchment paper.

  • Step 2: Sift together flour and baking powder. Set aside. Cream butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Set aside. Beat egg whites until stiff, but not dry. Set aside.

  • Step 3: With a mixer at slow speed, add flour mixture to butter mixture, alternately with milk. Beat well after each addition. Beat in vanilla extract. Gently fold egg whites into batter. Pour into prepared pans.

  • Step 4: Bake until toothpick inserted into center comes out clean. (about 25 minutes).
