Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 1/2 lean beef round (I used marinating steak)
  • 8 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup uncooked barley
  • 3 cups green cabbage, chopped
  • 1 cup carrots, sliced
  • 1 cup celery, chopped
  • 1/4 cup parsnips, chopped (optional)
  • 2 cups onions, chopped
  • 13 ounnces tomato paste

How to Make

  • Step 1: Place meat, water, barley, salt and pepper in dutch oven.

  • Step 2: Cover tightly and cook slowly 1 hour.

  • Step 3: Remove meat and cut up and return to pot.

  • Step 4: Add remaining ingredients and bring to a boil.

  • Step 5: Reduce heat and simmer about 45 minutes.
