  • 1/4 cup water, warm
  • 1 cup milk scalded, cooled
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1/4 cup orange juice
  • 2 tablespoons orange zest
  • 5 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • Icing
  • 1 cup powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest
  • 6 ounces orange juice, concentrated (1 container)

How to Make

  • Step 1: Proof yeast in warm water.

  • Step 2: Scald milk and add shortening, cool down.

  • Step 3: Add to yeast along with orange juice and zest.

  • Step 4: Add eggs, salt and mix.

  • Step 5: Add flour and mix.

  • Step 6: Cover and let rise until double (20 minutes).

  • Step 7: Punch down.

  • Step 8: Knead on a floured board for 5 minutes.

  • Step 9: Place in greased bowl rolling until top is greased.

  • Step 10: Cover with warm damp towel.

  • Step 11: Let rise in warm spot until double (2 hours).

  • Step 12: Punch down. Let sit 15 minutes.

  • Step 13: Roll out 10 inch x 16 inch x 1/2 inch thick.

  • Step 14: Cut strips 10 inch long by 3/4 inch wide with pizza cutter.

  • Step 15: Roll each strip into knot and place on lightly greased cookie sheet.

  • Step 16: Tuck ends underneath.

  • Step 17: Cover with damp towel.

  • Step 18: Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.

  • Step 19: Let rise until double.

  • Step 20: Bake for 12 minutes until lightly browned.

  • Step 21: While dough is rising on cookie sheet make icing.

  • Step 22: Add zest to powdered sugar.

  • Step 23: Then add thawed orange juice concentrate to sugar a tablespoon at time stirring hard; keep adding until

  • Step 24: The mixture has consistency of frosting.

  • Step 25: When rolls are a little cooled brush icing on with a pastry brush.
