Step 1: Combine broth, water and tomatoes in a 3-quart microwave safe casserole.
Step 2: Cover with lid or vented plastic wrap.
Step 3: Microwave on high for 10 minutes or until boiling.
Step 4: Stir in mushrooms, barley, onion, dill, caraway, salt, sugar and pepper.
Step 5: Re-cover and microwave on high 20 minutes, or until barley is tender, adding water as needed.
Step 6: Stir in ham.
Step 7: Microwave 3 minutes more.
Step 8: Top each serving with a dollop of sour cream and chives.
